Things are getting serious in Rostock: The construction work for the Warnow Bridge has now been officially put out to tender. This was announced today, August 12, 2025. Despite the excitement surrounding the tender, financing and approval for the ambitious project have not yet been secured. NDR reports a surprising reaction from the citizens, as this issue had not previously been discussed in the responsible committees or citizens' meetings.
The call for tenders, which has been published across Europe, is generating both enthusiasm and skepticism. After all, the question arises as to whether the legal framework for this tender is really tenable when the financing and the construction decision are still in the balance. Experts agree that the tender is legally questionable under these conditions. Nevertheless, the city administration evades the criticism and refers to a “provisional grant notice” from the federal government, which is intended to support the confident forecast for early approval.
Tender in detail
The construction costs for the Warnow Bridge are estimated at 63 million euros. The majority of this amount will be covered by funding. In the meantime, however, there are still uncertainties regarding the binding commitment of these funds, as well as the city's increased own contribution. Tenders Germany provides further information on the project, which is being carried out under the supervision of the Rostock Society for Urban Renewal.
The Warnow Bridge is being designed as a modern pedestrian and cycle path bridge. The construction envisages a steel bridge with a concrete deck. A bascule bridge with a hydraulic drive is planned, which will have a total span of 541.16 meters and a width of 6 meters. According to the current schedule, construction is scheduled to begin on December 1, 2025 and continue until approximately May 31, 2028.
Outlook on the project
The preparations are in full swing, and as can be seen from the projects dba shows, the Warnow Bridge is just one of many construction projects that have the motto of sustainable urban development. It will be exciting to see how the situation regarding financial security and building permits will develop. This may also cause unrest among the population, as the plan approval process is not expected to be completed before November 2025.
