Greifswald doctor receives prestigious kidney research award
In a ceremonial setting, Dr. Florian Siegerist, doctor from Greifswald, with the Rosanna Gusmano Award for Young Investigators in Basic Science excellent. This prize was awarded to him during the European Renal Association (ERA) Congress, considered the largest European meeting for kidney research. Thanks to its significant work to improve the pathological diagnosis of kidney biopsies over the last ten years, Siegerist was able to prevail against more than 2,000 applicants and is among the top 7 submissions.
Siegerist emphasizes that despite similar biopsy findings, kidney patients have different disease courses. “The connection between basic medical research and medical practice is crucial,” says Siegerist. With the support of the German Research Foundation, he aims to ensure that doctors have in-depth knowledge in both areas in order to build better treatment bridges. The award, which also recognizes the nephrological research landscape in Greifswald, was presented by Prof. KarlhansFIN, the scientific director of the university medicine.
What do we know about Rosanna Gusmano?
The award is named after the renowned Italian kidney specialist and pediatrician Rosanna Gusmano named, who played a crucial role in the development of pediatric nephrology in Italy. Born in 1928, she left an impressive legacy with 450 scientific publications and several book chapters on nephrology. Gusmano was a pioneer in the field of pediatric dialysis and founded the first pediatric kidney transplant unit in Italy.
As the founder of the “Fondo Malattie Renali del Bambino”, she supported low-income families during their children’s hospital stays. Her passion for kidney disease and commitment to research have not only inspired her students but also left a lasting impact on the field. Her life story is an extraordinary inspiration for doctors like Dr. winner.
The research is bearing fruit
Siegerist, who was already recognized as a student for an idea sketch for a scientific start-up, is currently at the children's clinic at the university and is working with a team on innovative treatment methods for kidney patients. Before working there, he worked at the Institute of Anatomy and Cell Biology. With the start-up Nipoka he is involved in the development of specific therapeutic approaches.
The rapid development in kidney research and the resulting tests in everyday clinical practice are also thanks to contributions from research centers such as Institute for Experimental Pediatric Nephrology possible. Important advances in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases are being achieved here. Overall, Siegerist's success demonstrates not only his personal talent and commitment, but also the strength of research in the region and beyond.
