Seduction and deception: The dispute” in the Eldena monastery unleashes emotions!
For theater lovers, the Theater Vorpommern is a very hot tip with its latest production of Pierre Carlet de Marivaux's play “The Controversy”. The piece is currently being performed at the picturesque Eldena Monastery near Greifswald, which is a popular venue not only because of its impressive scenery but also thanks to Caspar David Friedrich's famous painting. Director Hannes Hametner deals with the exciting topic of seduction and the passionate dialogue about loyalty and infidelity.
Marivaux, a master of the French Enlightenment, illuminates the complex facets of love and human behavior in his work. “The Dispute,” whose French title “La dispute” conveys a deeper meaning, is about a dispute between Prince (Hannes Rittig) and Hermiane (Christiane Schoon) over the question of which gender is responsible for infidelity. The dramatic plot unfolds when the prince allows six children, who were isolated at birth, to meet for the first time at the age of 18 with the aim of researching the question of infidelity in depth. An experiment with unpredictable results!
An entertaining and philosophical experience
The production, which can be seen until July 25th, promises a successful mix of entertainment and philosophical elements. Musical interludes like the song “Let it be love!” from Rosenstolz contribute to the lively atmosphere. Viewers can look forward to an exciting discovery when the protagonists are confronted with the enormous emotions of seduction and love for the first time.
The set design by Eva Humburg uses strong colors such as pink and red to make the powerful emotions of the characters visible. Hametner's suggestion to the actors to sharpen their senses and surrender to the game unabashedly is already having an effect: the actors shine with great enthusiasm and interact with the audience in a humorous way. Towards the end of the two-hour performance, the questions of loyalty and seduction are dealt with in a playful way, and the thoughtful final wisdom remains: “The world is bigger than you imagine.”
A look into the past
The original context of Marivaux's work is fascinating - it was written in the mid-18th century and brought the author some fame for a long time before his works fell into obscurity after the French Revolution. Since the end of the 19th century, however, they have made a comeback and are becoming increasingly popular. The central question of his play, which gender is more prone to infidelity, remains timelessly relevant and also stimulates contemporary viewers to think. With this production, the Theater Vorpommern shows that the themes of love and seduction have lost none of their relevance.
Overall, “The Controversy” is an exciting performance that raises questions and at the same time entertains the audience with humor and lightness. Here philosophical depth meets cheerful entertainment, making the production an unmissable experience in North German theater life.
The first performances have already sold out, and upcoming performances promise to spark far-reaching conversations about the complexities of human relationships. A good reason to secure your tickets quickly!
