Wolgast: Wendorf mill in ruins after arson!
In the small town of Wolgast, which is located not far from the Baltic Sea, the Wendorf mill, a historical monument, fell victim to the devastating flaming inferno. The fire, which started on the night of Friday to Saturday, is attributed to an 18-year-old man who is now standing before the youth jury court for arson. The court recently sentenced him to a youth prison sentence of one year with two years probation. The damage caused by the fire is estimated at approximately 290,000 euros, while the cost of demolishing the building is estimated at around 50,000 euros.
The Wendorfsche Mühle, which was built in 1807, not only represented the tradition of milling, but was also intended as a location for exhibitions and as a location for films. It is tragic that the entrepreneur who bought the mill about eight years ago to keep the tradition alive is now standing on a completely charred site. The only remains of the once stately mill are charred beams, collapsed roofs and burned-out tractors that were stored there.
The cause of the fire and the investigation
The investigation into the cause of the fire revealed that the fire started in an adjacent shed, where a tractor burst into flames. Fire investigators categorically ruled out a technical defect as the cause. Unfortunately, the fire brigade had no way of stopping the fire from spreading to the main building, so the mill burned down completely.
Meanwhile, questions are circulating about who is responsible for the accident. Due to ongoing investigations, the police are not releasing any further details about the 18-year-old's actions. But the nature of the arson casts a disturbing light on the crime. Arson is punished particularly severely in German juvenile criminal law - not least because of the potential danger to human life and property that such a fire poses criminal defense-roth.de explained.
The future of the Wendorf mill
The future of the Wendorfsche Mühle is currently in limbo. The owner explains that renovation is no longer affordable. The site, which covers an area of 2,000 square meters, is now classified as in need of renovation and at risk of collapse. Before the fire, repair work had been necessary after a storm that tore off parts of the roof. Tragically, the insurance coverage had already expired at this point because the insurance had canceled after the storm-related damage.
The ongoing misery surrounding the mill also led to the association that previously looked after the tradition dissolving after the fire. Given the circumstances, demolition and clearance appear to be the only most sensible solution.
With the loss of another historic building, the people of Wolgast not only regret the loss of a cultural heritage, but also the feeling that the memory of bygone times is gradually disappearing in the flames.
