First nomination for mayoral election in Schwaan received!
In Schwaan, northern Germany, the mayoral election is just around the corner. On November 16, 2025, citizens will have to cast their vote. If there is no clear result, a runoff election could even take place 14 days later. The first election proposal has already been received, from the Left party. The responsible returning officer, Dirk Antelmann, has confirmed the application, but the name of the candidate remains under wraps for the time being for data protection reasons.
The question remains exciting: Who will present themselves to the voters? The email address of the person nominated for election provides an indication of the candidate's gender, but still leaves many questions unanswered. Eight left-wing candidates ran in the last local elections a year ago, but no direct conclusions can be drawn about the upcoming mayoral election.
The current mayor and electability
Mathias Schauer, the incumbent mayor and member of the Independent Voters Schwaan (UWS), is also interested in running for re-election and can well imagine a third term in office. However, he has not yet officially submitted any documents. However, in order to take part in the election, candidates must meet certain eligibility requirements: They must be German citizens, at least 18 years old, have good health and must not have any debts. The deadline for submitting nominations is September 2, 2025 at 4 p.m.
Elections in Germany are not only an important part of democracy, but also a reflection of local issues and concerns. The local elections, which also include the mayoral election in Schwaan, are of fundamental importance for the political system. According to the Federal Agency for Civic Education, they bring the population into direct contact with their representatives, although voter turnout is often lower than in state or federal elections.
A look beyond the city limits
The mayoral election in Schwaan is part of a larger round of elections in the region: Mayoral elections are also scheduled in Bad Doberan and Graal-Müritz. Bad Doberan will vote on September 28, 2025, while Graal-Müritz's turn will be on May 11, 2025. The incumbent Benita Chelvier (CDU), who has been in office since 2018, plans to run again, provided the CDU nominates her. Jochen Arenz, who has been the independent mayor of Bad Doberan for seven years, has also announced that he will run again.
November 2025 will therefore be an exciting month for voters in Schwaan. The outcome of the election could not only influence the political landscape of the city, but also have a decisive influence on the development and future vision of the region. So it remains to be seen what the coming weeks will be like and which candidates will ultimately be on the ballot.
