Progress and delays: Bützow's Bahnhofstrasse in construction chaos!

Something is finally happening in Bützow: New Bahnhofstrasse, which has been closed to through traffic for almost two years, is making great progress. On behalf of WAZ, Eurawasser Nord GmbH has been carrying out extensive renovations of the drinking water and wastewater systems as well as the new construction of the rainwater collector since July 2023. Traffic has now shifted to the northern part of Bahnhofstrasse, between the “Wolken” level crossing and the bridge over the “Faulen Graben”. This is a temporary solution that became necessary after the renovation of the northern part in 2022.

The second construction phase was originally supposed to be completed in March 2025, but unexpected problems have made the situation a little more complicated. During the work, unforeseen relocations of district heating, gas, electricity and telecommunications were discovered that did not correspond to the original plans. Despite these challenges, those responsible are optimistic: the construction project continues to go well and cooperation with the companies involved is running smoothly.

Progress and investments

For the construction project, a mixed sewer system that previously existed was converted into a separate sewer system. Around 270 meters of wastewater sewer with a diameter of 400 mm and 25 meters of sewer with a diameter of 600 mm were laid at depths between 3.20 and 3.90 meters. Complex dewatering measures were necessary due to the depth of the work. A total of 105 house connections for drinking, dirty and rainwater were replaced. The drinking water supply line has been in operation since February 2025, and a rainwater canal with a separation system has also been successfully built.

The final work is currently underway, with the last ledges being placed and a three-part pendulum channel being built to drain the road surface water. Asphalting of the roadway will begin in the 26th calendar week and the essential work is expected to be completed at the beginning of August 2025. New avenue trees will also be planted on both sides of the street in autumn 2025. The total costs for the second construction phase amount to around 4 million euros, which is around half a million euros more than originally planned.

Next steps in water supply

But that's not all that's on the agenda in Bützow. In 2026, the Andreassteig will be renewed in collaboration with the city of Bützow. With the measures taken, it is important that the water supply not only works but is also safe. In this regard, it is not surprising that the WHO introduced the Water Safety Plan (WSP) concept in its drinking water guidelines back in 2003 to improve the safety of water supply systems. The WSP is a proven management system for identifying and assessing risks in drinking water supplies, which is used not only in large but also in smaller water supplies.

Water is not only an important commodity, but must also be managed conscientiously. The DVGW helps to ensure responsibility for water supply is safe and efficient. The technical regulations include a total of around 300 rules that are necessary for the legal safety and health protection of the drinking water supply. All of these measures contribute to understanding due diligence obligations and strengthening organizational security. Regular checks and adjustments also help to identify and correct weak points in the system - important for long-term security of supply.

Overall, the progress on Neue Bahnhofstrasse and other planned measures show that Bützow is on a solid course in terms of infrastructure and water supply. It remains to be hoped that local residents will soon be able to benefit from the improvements and the city will continue to thrive. Stay tuned for more news!
