Spanish project day at the high school: four teachers inspire students!

An exciting project day on the topic of Spanish was held at Teterower Gymnasium on June 15, 2025, which introduced the students to the rich culture and language. Four committed women followed in the teachers' footsteps and brought a breath of fresh air into the classroom. Sulma Aguilar and Genessi Cabrera from Honduras and Laura Serrano and Idalina Rodriguez-Lanzas from Spain introduced themselves to the curious eighth graders. A few years ago, the women decided to start a new life in Germany and had to master the German language, as nordkurier.de reports.

Sulma Aguilar fled her home country because of the high crime rate and found support in the integration café and from a free church community. For them and many other immigrants who are looking for a new home in Germany, integration courses are of fundamental importance. These were introduced in 2005 to promote the transmission of language and values. According to integrationsrechner.de, over two million people have taken part in such courses and were thus able to better understand not only the language, but also German culture and values.

Integration through language

Laura Serrano, who came to Teterow because of love, can only confirm the importance of the language courses. In order to be accepted into the courses, she first had to register as unemployed. This experience is crucial for many women looking to enter the world of work. Sulma now works in a nursing home, Genessi has her job as a dental technician in Güstrow, while Laura now works as a nurse. Idalina Rodriguez-Lanzas has established herself as a project manager at the Formate Association in Teterow.

On project day, the 86 eighth graders had the opportunity to apply the knowledge they had already learned. They not only received information about the Spanish language, but also exciting insights into the topics of democracy and dictatorship in Latin America. Julia Borzinski, the Spanish teacher, expressed the wish to organize this project day annually in order to enable the students to engage even more deeply with the subject.

The path to citizenship

An unfortunate topic that Laura Serrano brought up during the class was the changing mood in Germany. Some of the women who were present at the project day are considering applying for German citizenship, but this is associated with certain requirements, such as having to work regularly for five years. Sulma Aguilar submitted her application for citizenship a year ago and hopes to soon be able to be part of German society.

Overall, the story of these four women is an impressive example of how integration can be achieved through language. Participants in the integration courses acquire skills that help them find their way in everyday German life. The language courses are not only the key to professional success, but also to social interaction, which is also clearly emphasized by [integrationsrechner.de].
