In Güstrow, where table tennis always plays a special role, there is currently a moving event that is making the hearts of the sports community beat faster. The Güstrower SC, with its long tradition in table tennis, currently has around 100 members in the department. Around 50 of them are active in the games, including many children and young people. Department head and youth officer Matthias Hackbarth pulls out all the stops to allow the younger generation to actively participate in sport. “We want to get children away from cell phones and consoles and introduce them to the joy of table tennis,” explains Hackbarth.

In order to get closer to these goals, the association has launched a crowdfunding campaign via the 99 Funken platform in cooperation with the Sparkasse. This initiative is needed because the increase in members requires new jerseys and tracksuits. The existing equipment is getting old and urgently needs updating. “We hope to be able to finance around 80 jerseys for our youth team and five adult teams through this campaign,” continued Hackbarth. Community support is essential in this situation.

Popular sport and success for the future

Table tennis may often be considered a fringe sport in Germany, but the sport is enjoying growing popularity in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Güstrower SC focuses heavily on promoting young talent and actively participates in numerous tournaments and league games – around 30 weekends a year. The club's U19s play in the country's highest league and proudly achieved fourth place in the state team championship. The U15 girls were also able to achieve an excellent third place at the individual national championships, which underlines the good ongoing trend in the club.

Güstrower SC plans to play at a higher level among adults again next season and to register two more teams. An ambitious goal that shows how seriously the department takes the promotion of young talent and what successes it is striving for.

Trainer wanted: An opportunity for sports enthusiasts

Table tennis has developed over the years as a trend sport and appeals to people of all ages. The sport combines speed, precision and tactics, which makes it particularly exciting. The prerequisite for further development are talented young players who need to be supported at an early stage. Therefore, promoting young talent remains a central issue for the future of table tennis, not only in Güstrow, but also nationwide.

Whether in popular or competitive sports, Güstrow shows that the passion for table tennis is strong and must continue to be encouraged. The community is called upon to support the crowdfunding campaign and thus make an active contribution to promoting sport in the region.
