Traditional and modern: The new Modis 2.0” brings traditional costumes back!

In Bredentin, an idyllic district of the municipality of Sarmstorf, a fresh wind of tradition is blowing. This is where the new fashion group “Modis 2.0” was launched to continue the over 40-year history of the original “Modis” group, which was launched in 1976. At last year's Women's Day celebration, the brilliant idea was born to revive this old tradition. Eight committed women have come together to present traditional costumes and rural clothing ranging from 1945 to the turn of the millennium. This shows once again how lively and relevant cultural roots can be. The Uckermark courier reports that the demolition of the community center in Sarmstorf has reignited interest in these historical items of clothing. During this renovation work, numerous traditional costumes and items of clothing were discovered, which are now stored in the warehouse in Bredentin, supported by the local leisure and cultural club.

The new group has already celebrated its first appearance at the seniors' Christmas party in the Bredentiner Speicher. The women prepared meticulously for this event with weekly rehearsals in the second half of the year. The repertoire currently includes around 20 costumes that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also keep alive the stories and traditions they represent. Five women take on the role of models during the fashion show, moderated by the accomplished Doris Pohl, who is known for her Low German charm. Jana Schniedewind creates a festive atmosphere with her music.

The meaning of costume

Tracht, a term that describes traditional clothing in German-speaking countries, is also becoming increasingly important in northern Germany. The roots go back to the 15th century, and the term itself comes from the Old High German “ Draht(a)”, which means “that which is carried”. In regions such as Bavaria, traditional costumes such as Lederhosen and Dirndls are widely known, but in Northern Germany we also find notable examples such as the “Frisian Tracht” and the specific “Finkenwerder Tracht”, which are associated with both cultural identity and regional affiliation. Loud Wikipedia Traditional costumes are an expression of social classes, professions and ethnic groups, and the maintenance of these traditional clothing is an important part of the regional cultural heritage.

The traditional costume movement in the 19th century attempted to promote these traditional garments and counteract social change. It is a return to values that strengthen community; a concern that the Modis 2.0 also want to take into account with their appearances in senior citizens' facilities. While the commitment should remain manageable, the group shows great interest in preserving and passing on its traditions. In any case, the Modis' restart is an example of how an old tradition can be revived through community commitment and the will to keep history alive, and this shows once again: the old does not have to go away, but can continue to shine in the new. The “Modis 2.0” represent an exciting connection between the past and the present and enrich not only local cultural life, but also the hearts of the people they reach.
