Hydrogen buses for Rostock: Environmentally friendly local transport celebrates its anniversary!

Hydrogen buses are on the rise and not just since yesterday! In the Rostock district, passengers have been able to rely on these emission-free and quiet transport for a whole year. Of around 200 buses, 52 are now running on hydrogen, which means real progress towards climate-friendly mobility for the region. This reports NDR.

The advantages are obvious: the hydrogen buses do not emit any CO2 and can have an impressive range of over 500 kilometers per tank of fuel. In order to further expand the infrastructure for these environmentally friendly vehicles, two new filling stations were recently built in Bad Doberan and Güstrow, which will supply energy to both the buses and future hydrogen solutions.

Investments and funding

The project is funded with 18 million euros from the federal government and almost 8 million euros from the district. Rebus boss Thomas Nienkerk highlights the modern and quiet vehicles and notes that a funding application for a further 18 hydrogen buses has already been submitted for future-oriented planning. But as is the case in politics, there are also challenges. The district administrator of Ludwigslust-Parchim has threatened to withdraw from the offer due to unresolved financing issues, which is not exactly a good sign for everyone involved.

To ensure the safety of passengers, sudden cardiac arrest resuscitation equipment will also be provided. Such measures are essential in order to be able to act quickly in an emergency and show the transport companies' high sense of responsibility.

The trend towards hydrogen buses

However, the trend towards hydrogen buses is not only gaining momentum in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. From March 1, 2025, eleven hydrogen-powered fuel cell buses will also be used in regular service in Duisburg. These buses are also emission-free and feature quiet rides, which should improve air quality in cities. The equipment of these buses, which are up to 12 meters long, includes air-conditioned interiors and barrier-free access, such as DVG reported.

The DVG is investing a total of around 20.5 million euros in the 25 new hydrogen buses, of which the state is contributing 7 million euros in funding. Significant investments are also being made here in the purchase and construction of the necessary infrastructure because, according to the ministry, the promotion of alternative drive technologies in passenger transport is constantly being promoted. This is also reflected in the support for the procurement of charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructure, according to information from Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

In summary, it can be said that hydrogen technology is no longer just a dream of the future, but is already being actively implemented in many areas. Efforts to achieve environmentally friendly mobility are increasingly coming into focus and show that it makes sense and is necessary to set the course for a climate-friendly future.
