E-bike thefts in MV: 1.2 million euros loss in the first half of the year!
In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the theft of e-bikes will reach record levels in 2025. In the first half of the year, 321 thefts were registered, causing total damage of around 1.2 million euros. For comparison: In the same period last year there were 273 thefts with damage of 898,180 euros. This shows a worrying increase that is calling the police into action. n-tv.de reports that the damage amounts are based on police processes and could still change.
The island of Usedom is particularly affected by this wave. With almost 80 reported thefts and damage of 447,064 euros, this region accounts for around 38 percent of the total damage in the country. Due to the high crime rate, an investigation group was set up specifically for Usedom to improve the situation. ostsee-zeitung.de has shown that the number of thefts has continued to rise in recent years. By November 2023, over 800 thefts had already been recorded with a total loss of more than 2.6 million euros.
The theft amounts in detail
As the police state, thefts are recorded with damage of 300 euros or more, although it is possible that several e-bikes are affected in a single case. This means that the number of unreported thefts is probably much higher than the reportable cases suggest. The months of July to September are particularly critical as this is when most thefts occur. This coincides with the holiday season, when many e-bikes are parked outdoors. [augsburger- Allgemeine.de](https://www.augsburger- Allgemeine.de/panorama/e-bike-geklaut-diebstahl-statistics-deutschland-fahrraeder-13-12-23-101955489) highlights that e-bikes are particularly attractive to thieves due to their higher price. Production numbers have increased rapidly since 2014, and this year around 1.72 million e-bikes were produced in Germany alone.
- 321 Diebstähle in MV im ersten Halbjahr 2025
- Schaden von rund 1,2 Millionen Euro
- 80 Diebstähle auf Usedom, 447.064 Euro Schaden
- Ermittlungsgruppe für Usedom eingerichtet
- Für 2024: 659 Vorgänge und 2,3 Millionen Euro Schaden
Another example of the dramatic situation are the recent thefts on Usedom, where six e-bikes worth five-figure amounts were stolen in a short space of time. This shows how urgent action needs to be taken. In the Northwest Mecklenburg district, two e-bikes were also stolen in Boltenhagen, increasing the estimated damage to 5,000 euros.
Prevention measures
The police recommend that those affected take robust security measures. Several sturdy locks attached to fixed objects should be used, and additional security measures such as GPS tracking systems with alarm functions could also be useful. These measures offer some protection against thieves, whose organization and professionalism have increased in recent years. The likelihood of recovering a stolen e-bike is often low, which underlines the importance of these safety precautions.
The situation surrounding e-bike thefts is more than worrying. At a time when e-bikes are being hailed as an environmentally friendly alternative, user safety is at stake. We can only hope that the police and the communities will quickly find suitable solutions to curb this unsettling development.
