Theater in Conow: The Construction of a Box” – humor and current topics!

In the small community of Conow, the anticipation is palpable. On Sunday, June 29, 2025, the newly founded theater group Conow will make its debut. At 2 p.m., the stage in the picturesque rectory will become the backdrop for the play “The Construction of a Box” by Kay Stehr. Dazzling stories, current global political issues and a pinch of humor promise entertainment for young and old, and entry is even free.

The plot revolves around the winemaker Noah, who receives the unusual task of building an ark. As part of his efforts, he studies shipbuilding, which not only tests his skills but also addresses current societal challenges. The piece also reflects the pressure that farmers and producers are exposed to today and imaginatively takes up the ideas surrounding sustainable agriculture.

A rich tradition in the theater

The roots of theater go back to ancient times, when the first stage performances in honor of the wine god Dionysus were performed in Greece more than 2,000 years ago. At that time, a single actor performed, but later plays with several actors developed, as could be observed in ancient Rome. Over time, theater became more complex and important for society, and from religious content to political messages to social reflections - theater was and is a place of dialogue and expression.

Nowadays, theater groups like the one in Conow need support from different areas to bring their creative ideas to life. Public and private theaters should primarily serve to represent the colorful facets of society and create a forum for different voices.

Historical references and their messages

But the new play in Conow is more than just an amusing performance. It is also inspired by the historical framework of the German Peasants' War. At the beginning of the 16th century, many farmers suffered from high taxes and repression. The uprising, which was led, among other things, by Thomas Müntzer and the distribution of Luther's Bible translation to demand equality and freedom, is considered one of the first major freedom movements in Germany.

Combining the play's theme with the historical references to the peasant movement underscores the continued relevance of issues such as freedom and justice in today's society. A note that Winfried Kretschmann recently addressed: The demands from back then are still important today. Through the character of Noah and a humorous approach to providing insights into the conflict of its protagonists, the play will take up these themes and make them tangible for everyone present.

As befits a successful event, guests are treated to coffee and cake after the performance and have the opportunity to talk to the actors. This not only lights up the stage, but also strengthens the community.

An exciting day is ahead, and with “The Construction of a Box” the Conow theater group shows how theater can not only entertain, but also stimulate thought. Marcliche inspiration and the desire for sustainability and justice – these are the messages that will come to life on June 29th at the rectory in Conow.
