Matthias Schorn: A declaration of love for the MV Festival!

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, summer is all about music, as the festival celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2025. Matthias Schorn, the principal clarinetist of the Vienna Philharmonic, has been an integral part of this traditional festival for 20 years. He describes his connection to the festival as a “declaration of love” and vividly recalled his first concert here in 2005, which evoked a real sense of belonging for him. Schorn emphasizes that the mixture of the unique atmosphere, the dedicated festival team and a loyal audience makes the festival something special. “The overall package is right,” said Schorn in an [Nordkurier article](https://www.nordkurier.de/regional/mecklenburg-vorpommern/matthias-schorn-bei-den-festspiele-stimm-das- overallpaket-3677259).

The native Austrian, who performs with his ensemble Faltradio in the summer, will give a double concert in Ulrichshusen with the Brandenburg State Orchestra, which will take place on June 21, 2025. The program also includes a premiere of a humorous piece by Georg Breinschmid, which highlights both the clarinet and the double bass. “Alt Viennese Expression Dances” promises to be a very special experience. In this context, Schorn is also planning a “regulars’ table” with anecdotes and stories, even if the exact details are still open.

A musical experience for everyone

The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival, which has taken place annually since 1990, is now one of the largest classical music festivals in Europe, attracting over 180 concerts annually in over 80 locations, including parks, castles and churches. It all started in 1994 with a concert by Yehudi Menuhin. Since then, artists such as Daniel Hope, Kent Nagano and Anne-Sophie Mutter have enriched the festival with melodious contributions. The festival is particularly popular with “festival friends”, who form a support association to share their passion for music.

Some exciting events are planned for summer 2025 that will enrich the festival program:

  • 21. Juni: Doppelkonzert mit dem Brandenburgischen Staatsorchester und Matthias Schorn
  • 28. Juni: Late Night mit Daniel Hope
  • 26. Juli: Große Kammermusik mit Matthias Schorn
  • 30. August: Ein musikalisches Feuerwerk – das Sommerfest
  • 06. Dezember: Barockes Weihnachten mit Tabea Debus

Family friendly atmosphere

The venues, including the festival barn and Ulrichshusen Castle, contribute to the friendly, almost familial atmosphere that Schorn and the visitors so appreciate. Despite personnel changes within the team, the spirit of the festival could not be better preserved. Schorn emphasizes that the artist supervisors are versatile and committed.

It's an exciting time for all music lovers, because the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival offers both a first-class selection of music and an excellent setting to create unforgettable memories. A visit is definitely worth it! Information about the events and tickets is available on the Ulrichshusen website and on Wikipedia.
