Excitement over Bavaria: Federal police are practicing with helicopters in Starnberg!

On Wednesday evening, October 15, 2025, an impressive helicopter formation over the Munich area caused excitement and interest among residents. Around a dozen helicopters Federal Police could be seen in synchronized flight over the Starnberg district. A resident from Gauting took the opportunity and filmed the impressive relay that rose into the evening sky around 6:20 p.m.

The conspicuous formation is part of a large-scale helicopter exercise by the Federal Police that has been taking place in Germany since mid-September. This annual, quite intensive training week runs until October 17, 2025 and takes you to various locations, including cities such as Gifhorn, Hamburg and Neubrandenburg taking into account further routine flights.

Training under special conditions

The numerous flights that take off from Oberschleißheim to the Alpine region are part of a course for prospective federal and state helicopter pilots. The training takes place under difficult terrain conditions in order to optimally prepare the prospective pilots for various operational scenarios. The daily practice flights begin around 9 a.m. and usually end between 5 and 6 p.m. at the most. During this time there may of course be increased aircraft noise; The Federal Police asks residents for their understanding for these necessary exercises.

The Federal Police Aviation Group has its headquarters in Sankt Augustin near Bonn and operates a fleet of 93 helicopters in various weight classes. It is one of the largest aviation-specific organizations in the world and is used in border, rail and maritime surveillance. International authorities, such as Frontex, also receive support from this flying group and contribute to security in Germany.

A dark shadow over the exercise

However, Wednesday didn't just bring joy. Tragically, a gruesome discovery was made in Bavaria: a walker discovered human remains in a forest near Altenmarkt. This incident shocked the region and stands in stark contrast to the Federal Police's activities in the sky. With the flights over the Starnberg district, the Federal Police are showing their presence and training strength on the one hand, while on the other hand the investigation into the human remains raises doubts about the safety and condition of the municipal infrastructure.

Overall, the exercise sends a clear message of the commitment and professionalism of the German police, while tragic events such as the discovery in Altenmarkt illustrate how important such security structures are for society.
