The Big Schwof: Experience GDR festivals up close in Neubrandenburg!
A very special exhibition will open its doors in the Neubrandenburg Art Collection from June 22nd to September 7th: “The Great Schwof. Celebrating celebrations in the East”. The show promises an exciting insight into everyday culture in the GDR in advance and shows how people celebrated in the 80s. Over 250 photographs come to life here, all under the skillful curation of Petra Göllnitz. This is the last stop of the exhibition, which was previously shown in Jena, Brandenburg and Rostock.
“The Big Schwof” depicts the colorful side of life in the GDR. Visitors can expect not only snapshots of village festivals, punk parties, carnivals and pageants, but also insights into the social life of East Germans. Many of the photographs come from graduates of the Leipzig University of Graphics and Book Arts, who often worked without permanent employment. As [nordkurier.de](https://www.nordkurier.de/regional/neubrandenburg/vom-dorffest-bis-zur-punk-party-so- Feierten-die-menschen-in-der-ddr-3663409) reports, the images are a real quantum leap away from the clichés that often surround life in the GDR. Visitors from the old federal states are always surprised by this different perspective.
Insights and accompanying program
But that's not all: an extensive accompanying program is waiting to be discovered. These include informative discussions and tours that cover various topics, including eroticism and punk in the GDR. Göllnitz himself emphasizes that celebration was an outlet and expression of social life. This is impressively documented by the photographs.
A special note: The exhibition also attracts younger generations, including high school seniors who are warming to the history of their region.
artists and photographers
Göllnitz brought together more than 31 photographers from the GDR, including well-known artists such as Sibylle Bergemann and Roger Melis. These photographs take the viewer into a world full of emotions and memories.
“The Big Schwof” is not just an exhibition; it is also a place of exchange and understanding. The images tell stories of solidarity and joy that invite you to think about how people treat each other despite all adversities. According to [auf-nach-mv.de](https://www.auf-nach-mv.de/ Veranstaltungssuche/e-der-grosse-schwof-feste- Feiern-im-osten), the exhibition focuses on the attention, preservation and distribution of these valuable photographs, which show the GDR in a new light.
With this show, the Neubrandenburg Art Collection has created a real highlight that will appeal to culture vultures and history lovers alike. So let's go - the doors to the interesting past will soon open!
