Orgy of violence in Neubrandenburg: shocking kicks and pepper spray!

There seems to have been a lot of activity in downtown Neubrandenburg last weekend. An incident that was initially dismissed as a physical argument quickly turned out to be a serious fight with several people injured. According to a report by Northern Courier Police reported a total of four slightly injured people on Monday. But the severity of the injuries only became clear later.

A 40-year-old man required surgery after a brutal attack involving kicks to the head. He suffered a broken cheekbone and was released from the hospital on Wednesday. A closer look shows that this incident not only arose from a verbal argument over a beer between a 17-year-old and one of the attacker's compatriots, but also resulted in a violent attack. A 33-year-old Syrian, heavily intoxicated, sprayed pepper spray on those standing by after a brief argument. The situation escalated and the 40-year-old, who tried to intervene, was kicked several times by the aggressor on the ground while his wife tried to free him and was injured in the process.

The background to the dispute

But this was not the only violent incident in Neubrandenburg recently. On January 20, 2025, guests at a bar alerted the police after an argument between several women and men, some of Afghan and Chechen origin, led to physical altercations. Here too, pepper spray had to be used to calm the situation. This comes from a report by Press portal out. A 17-year-old Ukrainian woman attacked a 19-year-old German woman and a 24-year-old Syrian woman, after which the men intervened in the argument. A 29-year-old Afghan man was injured and was taken to the hospital.

The region's propensity for violence raises questions that are reflected in the broader social debate about the causes of violent crime. How Statista reported that violent crimes in Germany account for less than 4 percent of all registered crimes. Nevertheless, they have a lasting impact on the population's sense of security, especially when you look at the increasing numbers since 2021. Around 217,000 violent crimes were recorded in 2024, the highest number since 2007. An increase that has also been linked to social pressures and economic insecurities.

Worrying trends

Especially in times like these, when psychological stress and the after-effects of pandemic measures are increasingly affecting individuals, it is not surprising that juvenile crime is increasing. In 2024, the police managed to solve a good three-quarters of violent crime cases. Nevertheless, many questions about the overall social situation remain unanswered. What are the reasons why young people in particular - around a third of the suspects are under 21 years old - are so often involved in violent situations?

It remains to be seen how the ongoing investigations and the social debate will affect the security situation in Neubrandenburg and the surrounding area. It is clear that the area is currently struggling with an increased level of violence, which poses challenges for both politicians and the police.
