Reading sponsor Dieter (72): Why reading booths for children are urgently needed!
Dieter Langschwager, a 72-year-old pensioner from Neubrandenburg's Oststadt, has been a reading mentor for twelve years. His motivation is clear: he wants to get children excited about reading and help them develop their reading skills. The East Primary School benefits particularly from his efforts and that of around 70 other reading sponsors, most of whom also come from the pensioner generation. The common focus is to convey the joy of reading and to unfold the little miracles of the imagination through reading Making Children Strong reported.
But Langschwager faces challenges. The reading locations are limited; the sponsors often have to work with the children in undisturbed hallways or halls, which is not ideal. To counteract this, the idea of building closed reading cabins came up a year ago. These are intended to help little readers concentrate on their stories without being disturbed. Although there are already open reading booths, the public traffic disrupts the flow of reading.
Implementation challenges
With his experience in the construction industry, Langschwager estimates that building the cabins is relatively easy and inexpensive. Nevertheless, he is slowed down by official bureaucracy and the long process of obtaining building permits. The city of Neubrandenburg intends to integrate the reading cabins as part of a new fire protection concept. A specialist office is responsible for planning support, while the contractual assignment is currently being finalized. Langschwager is optimistic: Up to six flexibly usable rooms could be created, even if the exact costs and time frame are still unclear.
The role of reading sponsors
The importance of reading sponsors should not be underestimated; They not only bring stories closer to children, but also promote their concentration, language, empathy and self-confidence. This is done by the Reading Foundation supported, which has also set up a new digital volunteer area. Anyone interested can find information about reading sponsorships and support options here. According to the foundation, it is particularly important that volunteers are able to individually support children with different reading levels, as many teachers often lack capacity.
Dieter Langschwager is determined to carry out his work for as long as possible and to offer young people a start. In his opinion, reading is a key to life and he hopes that the planned reading booths will soon become a reality. The future of reading in Neubrandenburg could shine brighter thanks to his commitment and the support of reading sponsors and institutions such as the Reading Foundation.
