Military helicopter in Neubrandenburg: political celebrities visiting!

On Monday, a Luftwaffe transport helicopter landed at Trollenhagen Airport near Neubrandenburg, which caused a stir. The nature photographer Norbert Brandt took advantage of the opportunity and captured the aircraft as it approached. Interestingly, there appeared to be no passengers on board the Airbus Cougar AS 532 U2. Nordkurier reports that this helicopter is often used as a “VIP transporter” for ministers and parliamentarians and therefore has a representative character.

The Airbus Cougar AS 532 U2 is one of a range of versatile helicopters capable of carrying out a variety of military and civilian tasks. Originally designed as a further development of the Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma, the AS 532 is very popular. Among other things, it is powered by two powerful Turbomeca engines, which enable it to reach a top speed of 249 km/h. Wikipedia refers point out that the Cougar series also exists in armed form and can be equipped with different weapon systems.

Military exercises in the region

Parallel to the arrival of the helicopter, a parachutist exercise took place above the clouds of Neubrandenburg. A Lockheed KC-130J Hercules transport aircraft was also in action and made several rounds over the region, including Friedland and Neustrelitz. These aircraft regularly land at Trollenhagen Airport, which was a military airport during the Nazi era but is now used mainly for civilian flights. Nordkurier added that the airport is also close to a Bundeswehr location, the System Center 24.

The technical equipment of the Airbus Cougar AS 532 U2 is also remarkable. With a crew of two, the helicopter can transport up to 20 soldiers or lift a payload of up to 4,650 kg. Thanks to its modified design and powerful engines, the Cougar has proven itself in numerous countries around the world, including Germany. Bundeswehr aircraft list the Cougar helicopters as a critical link in airlift capability.

Overall, Monday in Neubrandenburg was marked by military activities that will be remembered not only through aviation, but also through the presence of important helicopters and transport aircraft. Such exercises and the visibility of military personnel in the region not only increase public awareness of the Air Force, but also demonstrate its commitment to national security.
