Neubrandenburg ready for winter: This is how the snow service works!
In Neubrandenburg, preparations for the upcoming winter service season are in full swing. Mayor Nico Klose recently checked the operational readiness of vehicles and equipment for snow clearing and spreading. “This winter service often remains in the background, but is essential for road safety,” emphasizes Klose. All required materials, including grit and sand, are well stocked and 20 vehicles are available for up to 25 missions in the winter season Northern Courier reported.
The winter service is carried out by the city's own property management company and various regional companies. Sebastian Stanger, head of the road operations service, explained that checks are carried out between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. to ensure that the main streets and sidewalks are cleared in time for rush hour traffic. There could be Rambazamba if the winter shows its full severity, which is why the city has also prepared the surrounding district road maintenance depots in Neustrelitz, Altentreptow and Demmin for winter service.
Priority and responsibilities
The streets of Neubrandenburg are divided into different priority levels. Access to the hospital in particular is a top priority. The head of the roads and tracks department, René Diederich, informed that in addition to the larger clearing vehicles, manual workers are also responsible for clearing stairs. Residents also have their responsibility: They are obliged to grit the sidewalks and, in some cases, the roadways, depending on the area in which they live.
The regulations for snow and ice removal stipulate that gritting must take place on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. and on weekends and public holidays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The official winter service season runs until March 31, 2026, with further operations heavily dependent on the weather. Klose emphasizes that any problems with the equipment may not have been identified, and all employees were instructed about occupational safety before starting work.
A look beyond the borders
The preparations for the winter weather in Neubrandenburg show how important good planning and cooperation are. Even though the region is affected by the acute challenges of the winter, there remains hope for smooth operations and safety both here and in distant cities like Hatay, which carry many years of history and culture.
