Neubrandenburg: The Garden of Encounter brings generations together!

Something exciting is happening in the garden association “Am Kuhdamm” in Neubrandenburg: The “Garden of Encounter” is being created here, a project that aims to bring people together who are often alone. The main focus is on seniors and younger garden enthusiasts. The aim is to promote open cooperation without creating a fixed club structure. So if you want to sow, water, feed and harvest in the garden, you've come to the right place. The garden should not only be a meeting place, but also an oasis for encounters.

A lot has already been achieved on an area of 800 square meters: garbage and bulky items have been removed and the garden house is ready for creative ideas. A table, chairs and suitable tools are available. Community gardens, flower beds, a flowering meadow and even a chicken coop are planned to bring the garden project to life. The first meetings are planned for two to three times a week, with the focus on self-determination.

A place for everyone

This particularly appeals to older people who can no longer maintain their own garden, as well as new neighbors and local gardening enthusiasts. The project is being funded by the German Television Lottery with 186,000 euros to purchase building materials, barrier-free access and raised beds. But before things can really get started, enough interested people have to be found. The garden is scheduled to open its doors by spring 2026 at the latest.

Similar initiatives in Germany

The “Garden of Encounter” in Neubrandenburg is not the first project of this kind. In Marzahn-Mitte, for example, there is also such a community garden that focuses on ecological and community activities. As gartenderbegegnung.de reports, this garden opened in 2021 and offers an oasis for people, plants and animals. Here, anyone interested can garden on their own beds and exchange experiences.

Initiatives like these are particularly important to combat loneliness and create community. Organizers like the Malteser support similar projects in which barriers are broken down and everyone has the opportunity to get involved. What is particularly noteworthy is that such gardens not only benefit nature, but also the social contacts of the participants.

Get inspired and become part of the green movement in your neighborhood! A good hand at gardening and a thriving community await you.
