Neubrandenburg: Historic railway line is to be revived on July 12th!

In recent years, the topic of rail has experienced a true renaissance in Germany. There are also positive developments in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that are making the hearts of rail lovers beat faster. The railway line between Neubrandenburg and Friedland, which was taken out of service on January 14, 1994 with the last passenger train run in over 100 years, is now the focus of possible reactivation. Again Northern Courier reports, the passenger association “Pro Bahn” is planning a special trip on July 12th to promote local rail passenger transport (SPNV) on this connection.

However, the route, which stretches for around 22 kilometers, is in poor condition. Currently only freight traffic travels there, traveling at what feels like walking speeds. There are now freight trains on the route again, although they take around 70 minutes for the entire journey. According to estimates, the repair of the route would cost 8.68 million euros, as shown in various analyses.

A look into the future of the railway line

The current discussions on reactivation are part of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state transport plan, which aims to modernize rail transport. There are already positive signals from the responsible authorities: state funds have already been approved, and a positive report from the Federal Railway Authority is expected in September 2025. If things go well, the first renovation work could begin as early as the end of 2024, reports NDR.

The potential analysis, presented at the beginning of April 2025, predicts a passenger volume of around 534 people on weekdays, which underpins the need for this connection. This makes the planned special trip, which departs Neubrandenburg at 9:40 a.m. and arrives in Friedland at 11:12 a.m., particularly important in order to raise awareness of this railway line.

Political and social interest

The reactivation of the railway line is not only an important infrastructural project, but also a sign that rail is celebrating a comeback in Germany. More and more people are attaching importance to good connections and see rail as an environmentally friendly mobility option, which the federal government has also clearly defined in its goals for the coming years. The aim is to double the number of passengers compared to 2018 by 2030, as the Pro-rail alliance emphasized.

The special trip on July 12th is a first step to draw attention to the reactivation. Those interested can explore the sights in Friedland and find out about the history of the railway line. Tickets are available for 17 euros for adults and 10 euros for children. The return journey takes place at 12.35 p.m., so that an exciting day in Friedland city center is possible.

The coming months will be crucial and preparations are in full swing. If everything goes according to plan, closing the gap in rail transport between Neubrandenburg and Friedland could soon become a reality, in the interests of sustainable mobility and strengthening regional connections.
