Serious accident on Rügen: cyclist seriously injured after crash with car!

A serious accident caused horror on Rügen on Friday, July 4, 2025. A 62-year-old cyclist was seriously injured in a head-on collision with a car. The incident occurred on the connecting road between Rambin and Götemitz when an 89-year-old driver drove into the oncoming lane for unknown reasons and collided with the cyclist. The impact was so violent that the cyclist was thrown onto the windshield of the VW Touran.

While the cyclist was taken to Stralsund Hospital with serious injuries, the driver was uninjured, but his vehicle was no longer drivable. The cyclist's 66-year-old companion was lucky in misfortune: he was able to avoid the collision and remained unharmed. The Bergen police have seized the 89-year-old's driver's license, and the criminal police are now investigating on suspicion of endangering road traffic. The material damage is estimated at around 5,000 euros, reports Tixio.

Bicycle accidents in the region

The Ruge accident is not isolated. It was not until 2024 that reports of serious traffic accidents involving cyclists increased. Two serious accidents occurred in the area one afternoon: a 63-year-old man fell on his mountain bike and sustained serious injuries. An hour later there was a serious collision between two e-bike riders, in which a 62-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries and had to be taken to hospital in Rostock by rescue helicopter. Only one of the two women was wearing a bicycle helmet, which the police consider to be a strong indication of the safety of cyclists, reports the Press portal.

A worrying trend

When you look at the numbers, it becomes clear that cycling in Germany is not only a lot of fun, but also involves considerable risks. According to current statistics, a total of 441 cyclists died in an accident in 2024. What is particularly alarming is that 63.5% of fatally injured cyclists were 65 years of age or older. This development shows that road safety for older cyclists is becoming more urgent than ever. Only around half of the accidents are caused by the cyclists themselves; in accidents involving cars, the cyclists are at fault in only 24.7% of cases. However, many of the seniors do not give due consideration to safety, with cyclists being the main culprit in collisions with pedestrians in 57% of cases statistician point out.

In view of these alarming figures, it is to be hoped that the tragic accident on Rügen will serve as a wake-up call to take the safety of all road users seriously and to take appropriate measures to prevent accidents.
