Yiddish sounds and soul food: Sharon Brauner in Neustrelitz!

On Friday, September 19th, the city of Neustrelitz awaits a very special musical highlight. From 7.30 p.m. the talented singer and actress Sharon Brauner will be on stage in the Fabrik.Scheune of the Alte Kachelofenfabrik, accompanied by the renowned pianist Harry Ermer. Under the title “Yiddish Soulfood,” Brauner will present a musical journey through Yiddish culture and music that is fascinating not only for lovers of the Yiddish language.

Sharon Brauner, daughter of two Holocaust survivors, brings a unique perspective to her program. Their performance will be a tribute to Yiddish popular music and will include not only classic Jewish evergreens, but also their own chansons and even never-before-heard songs. The musical palette ranges from tango to jazz and tells stories that go from Poland to Berlin, Vienna, Moscow, Tel Aviv, Miami, Hollywood and Buenos Aires. This diversity is not only an expression of her own biography, but also a celebration of the rich legacy of Jewish creativity in the 20th century, as Strelitzius reports.

A journey into Yiddish theater culture

But how does all this fit into the larger framework of Yiddish theater and music traditions? Yiddish theater, which flourished between the late 19th century and World War II, has inspired many artists and generations over the years. This tradition goes back to the roots of Jewish history and originally developed from Purim games, which were influenced by Christian mystery plays. According to Wikipedia, Abraham Goldfaden is known as the father of modern Yiddish theater and played a crucial role in the founding of the first professional theaters.

This culture has left a deep mark not only in Europe, but also in North America, where there was a “golden era” of Yiddish theater in the early 20th century. Jewish theaters helped preserve the Yiddish language and present it in a new light, bridging the past and present. The combination of music and theater, as seen in the event with Sharon Brauner, shows how vibrant and relevant these traditions still are today.
