A24 completely closed until 4 p.m.: traffic warning for travelers to Hamburg!
The A24 motorway will be completely closed in both directions today, January 14, 2026, between the Hagenow and Wöbbelin junctions in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district. This measure is being taken in preparation for a construction site that will cause significant traffic disruptions for both travelers and commuters. T-Online reports that the closure is expected to last until 4 p.m.
As befits a Monday morning, there are already the first traffic jams: on the A24 there is a slight backlog in the direction of Hamburg before the Hagenow exit near Bandenitz. There is also heavy traffic in the opposite direction, between the Schwerin junction and the Wöbbelin junction, so drivers have to be prepared for longer journey times. Diversion routes are also affected due to increased traffic volumes, but so far no major traffic jams have been reported on these routes.
Reasons for blocking
The complete closure of the A24 is necessary in order to build two temporary bridges at Neu Zachun and Lüblow. In the future, these bridges are intended to replace old, dilapidated bridges and thus prevent uncontrolled departures. During construction work, traffic in the direction of Hamburg will be redirected via the parallel Berlin lane. Such construction work is commonplace, but in this case the disruption is expected to last six months, during which traffic disruptions are also to be expected.
Similar challenges in the Hamburg area
The A24 is one of the most important traffic arteries in northern Germany. In addition to the current closure, further construction sites will be planned in the near future. ADAC informs that the A24 will be closed in another section between September 12th and 15th in order to raise a pedestrian bridge and carry out roadway renovations. Massive diversions will also be necessary these days. The A1 will also be closed for some time in September for construction work on the Norderelb Bridge between Hamburg and Lübeck.
For drivers and travelers, this means that patience is required. The current traffic conditions on the A24 and A1 can be viewed on the ADAC website and enable travelers to plan in advance and possibly choose alternative routes. A good hand when driving is required in the next few months.
