First barrier-free fishing pier on Lake Wockersee: fishing for everyone!
A new, barrier-free fishing pier was inaugurated at Wockersee in Parchim, which will enable people with and without disabilities to enjoy the joy of fishing. The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Anglers Association is behind this project and has been working on the planning since 2021. The construction, which started in February 2023, was an initiative by the anglers themselves who want to campaign for more participation and inclusion. Claudia Thürmer, a representative of the association, emphasized the solidarity among the anglers in her speech.
The construction costs for the jetty amounted to around 75,000 euros and were financed from the fishing taxes of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Dr. Ramona Kern, who also took part in the inauguration, emphasized the importance of experiencing nature together and the possibility of barrier-free fishing. For this purpose, the jetty was equipped with special railings and edges that prevent walkers from falling into the water. At the same time, an obstacle-free path to the water was created so that all anglers, including those in wheelchairs, can easily cast their bait.
The advantages of the new jetty
The barrier-free fishing pier at Wockersee represents an important step towards inclusion. It is not only a place to pursue your passion for fishing, but also a place to meet. Since there are already over 40 such footbridges in Schleswig-Holstein, the experience from this region could be put to good use in the construction in Parchim. Bernd Dickau, the chairman of the association, announced that the construction of further barrier-free footbridges was planned, but only if certain conditions were met. These include barrier-free access, short paved paths and sufficient space for carers.
Off to nature – for everyone!
Fishing has a long tradition and inspires people of all ages. The focus is not only on enjoying nature, but also on the opportunity to reduce stress and the social component of the hobby. An important aspect why fishing is accessible to many: people with disabilities can apply for an exemption if they cannot take the fishing license test. The terms and conditions are straightforward and processing typically takes up to four weeks.
In addition, barrier-free fishing spots are an important concern as they make it possible to actively participate in nature conservation and obtain organic food. So if you're looking for a relaxing fishing experience, you'll now find another great destination in the Parchim region that shows how an inclusive society lives. The jetty at Wockersee is a sign that fishing can be accessible to everyone, regardless of possible restrictions. And as the saying goes? Anyone who fishes always has a reason to be happy!
