Henry Hübchen: Everything in Berlin is neglected – the Baltic Sea is my home!”
Where are the crowds going? More and more celebrities and holidaymakers are coming to the Baltic Sea, and the well-known actor Henry Hübchen is no exception. Hübchen, who has his roots in Berlin, has decided to live on the coast. “The sea is my friend,” says the 78-year-old, who regularly spends time with his family in the picturesque surroundings of the Darss peninsula and even makes low-budget films there with friends from the SurfCenter Wustrow. But his love for the Baltic Sea is accompanied by a clear criticism of his hometown of Berlin.
In an interview, Hübchen expresses his dissatisfaction with Berlin, which he describes as “overwhelmed with itself”. He describes the city as “neglected” and highlights problems such as inadequate infrastructure and housing, increasing challenges in integration, and inadequate schools. He is particularly critical of the accessibility of offices, which are often perceived as difficult to access. “The world is upside down and Berlin is neglected,” he expresses concern about the aggressive mood in many public spaces, where conflicts between cyclists, scooter riders and car drivers are commonplace [t-online.de].
Dynamics on the Baltic Sea
Life on the Baltic Sea is good for Hübchen. He enjoys the idleness and relaxed atmosphere that coastal life brings. During his childhood and youth, he experienced the GDR up close, from its founding to the fall of the Wall, and these experiences continue to shape him to this day. His defining image of Berlin stands in stark contrast to the idyll on the Baltic Sea.
However, the challenges facing cities like Berlin are not just a problem for the capital. The necessary development of infrastructure is also being discussed in holiday regions. As part of the new national tourism strategy, which is to be presented in the first half of 2026, the federal government is planning extensive measures to strengthen tourism in Germany. Among other things, projects are planned for climate-friendly mobility in holiday regions near the coast, and a lot is also being set in motion for travel to popular holiday destinations on the North and Baltic Seas, as the Bundestag reported.
The discrepancy between Berlin's urban reality and the relaxing coastal atmosphere is not only reflected in the actor's life, but is also a sign of the current challenges that many large cities have to overcome. While Hübchen relaxes by the sea, it remains to be seen whether the structural problems in the capital will soon improve.
