New theater year in Schwerin: 31 premieres and a tent for art!

The Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin is starting the 2025/26 season under the exciting motto “We are here”. This season will be particularly ambitious: an incredible 31 premieres are planned, coupled with over 30 concerts by the Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle Schwerin and numerous revivals and special events. General director Hans-Georg Wegner and commercial director Christian Schwandt presented the multifaceted program, which focuses on cultural presence in the region, diversity and proximity to the audience. [Schwerin-lokal.de] reports that the anticipation for the theater experience is twice as great, as advance bookings start earlier than ever on July 4th.

What is a little challenging, however, is the fact that the Great House in Schwerin remains temporarily closed due to construction work. In order not to let the audience down, the theater tent in the kitchen garden is put in the spotlight. This offers space for 500 spectators and shows changing productions every eight weeks. Here, theater fans can look forward to classics such as “Die Fledermaus”, the musical “Sweeney Todd” and Shakespeare’s masterpiece “Hamlet”. [ndr.de] notes that the introduction of a tent subscription is intended to ensure continuity and variety.

Anniversaries and new formats

Another highlight of the coming season is the 80th anniversary of the Junge Staatstheater in Parchim. The anniversary season starts with an evening of folk songs under the motto “It can’t stay like this forever”. The Fritz Reuter stage is also active and is showing three new productions, including the Low German premiere “Rup und Rünner”. [ndr.de] This diversity underlines the impressive theater tradition in the region and shows the strength of the Mecklenburg State Theater.

The theater also aims to provide broad access with projects for several generations and formats accompanying lessons, such as Georg Büchner's “Woyzeck”. Furthermore, a “music kit” is being introduced especially for schools, which promotes musical education for young people. The “Späti Deluxe” series and numerous readings and discussion formats are also part of the program to strengthen dialogue between theater and urban society. [ Schwerin-lokal.de] promises that this will bring a breath of fresh air to the theater landscape.

Concert enjoyment and special performances

Music lovers will also get their money's worth. The season offers concert highlights with young conductors and works by composers such as Beethoven, Price, Sibelius and Bonis. A special experience is the Recycling Concerto by Gregor A. Mayrhofer, which will amaze the audience. Two premieres are also being planned: “Sterni and the Astronauts” and “Portrait of My Mother with Ghosts”. These works promise to bring a breath of fresh air into the theater repertoire.

Overall, the Mecklenburg State Theater appears ambitious and approachable despite economic challenges. It will be a true celebration of culture, inviting audiences from across the region to experience the diversity and richness of the theater and music scene in a comprehensive program. [ndr.de] reminds us that the theater is no longer just a place for performances, but rather occupies an important place in the community as a cultural institution.
