New theater tent in Schwerin: Big program for the 2025/26 season!
The Mecklenburg State Theater has announced an exciting program for the 2025/26 season that is causing excitement in the regional scene-based cultural landscape. Due to extensive construction work on the Great House, the new theater tent in Schwerin's kitchen garden will serve as an alternative venue. Here, up to 500 spectators will be able to enjoy numerous performances, including the popular operetta “Die Fledermaus”, the dark musical “Sweeney Todd” and the timeless play “Hamlet”. So reported NDR.
The renovation of the tent location, which began on March 17, 2025, is already well advanced. The theater tent itself offers impressive technical equipment that replicates the Big House stage almost perfectly. Rehearsals for Franz Lehár’s “The Merry Widow,” which will premiere on June 27, 2025, began after Pentecost. Six different productions are planned for the season from September 2025 to August 2026, including a Christmas fairy tale. The young audience can also look forward to a song evening entitled “It can’t always stay like this,” which will mark the start of the Junge Staatstheater’s anniversary season.
The castle festivals and anniversaries
Another highlight will be the performance of the “Threepenny Opera” as part of the 2026 Castle Festival, which will take place the following year. Furthermore, the theater in Parchim is celebrating its 80th anniversary and the Fritz Reuter stage is planning three premieres, including the Low German premiere of “Rup und Rünner”. This colorful program promises to sustainably enrich the cultural landscape of the region.
With a view to the coming season, the focus will be on the new director Joanna Lewicka, who will take over the helm from 2026/27 and succeed Nina Steinhilber. Lewicka has previously worked successfully in Warsaw and Szczecin and will certainly bring a breath of fresh air to the programs.
Accessibility and arrival
Visitors to the theater tent can look forward to numerous amenities. In addition to two disabled parking spaces directly at the tent, barrier-free access and wheelchair spaces are also available. The total area of the three tents is 2,200 m² and will delight the audience with a foyer tent with catering and a backstage tent. The Küchengarten location is also only about a 10-minute walk from the Great House and can be easily reached by bus or tram Mecklenburg State Theater communicates.
The variety of performances and the new alternative venue show that the Mecklenburg State Theater has a good hand even in challenging times and not only maintains the theater tradition, but also follows innovative ways to inspire the audience.
