Prices at rest stops in MV: That's how high the hunger kick is!

Rest areas on motorways are a frequent stop for many travelers, whether on the way to vacation or on longer journeys. However, a recent test shows that the prices in these places are often so high that you wonder whether you should bring your own food. The Northern Courier took a close look at the prices at various rest stops in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the results are impressive – in the truest sense of the word.

The prices for common snacks and meals are particularly striking. At the Stolpe Nord service area, which is on the A24 towards Hamburg, a breakfast cover costs a whopping 13.40 euros. For a good portion of spaghetti Bolognese, travelers have to fork out 13.50 euros, and those who opt for a “Jägerart” schnitzel will spend even more at 16.50 euros. But the devil is also in the details - travelers at the Fuchsberg Süd service area on the A20 between Wismar and Rostock pay 14.49 euros for a schnitzel with fries; the currywurst with fries costs 11.99 euros.

Compare prices

The pricing system at rest stops is not only a hot topic in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The ADAC has shown in a comprehensive test that the prices at 70 rest stops in Germany are overall higher than at truck stops. An example: A 0.5 liter bottle of water is available at rest stops for an average of 2.15 euros, while you only pay 1.42 euros for it at truck stops. Such differences are not just minor; They show that if you want to save, you should be aware of the prices at rest stops.

Waiting in line to pay can be frustrating. A good 46% of truck stops advertise free use of toilets, while most rest stops charge a fee of 70 cents. The Sanifair voucher you get for this can be redeemed for an item, which unfortunately doesn't completely offset the fees.

Travelers react

The price hike has prompted many travelers to find creative solutions. A travel group from Münsterland reported that they preferred to bring their own food to avoid the high prices. Even if the prices at the rest stops are sometimes comparable to common restaurant prices, they are often incomprehensible for many travelers.

The price differences when refueling are particularly noticeable. At rest stops, the diesel price is on average 25 cents and E10 even 26 cents higher than the prices at truck stops. The highest difference even reaches 39 cents at some locations. This makes it clear that refueling here is definitely not profitable.

In summary, the rest areas on German motorways could do with another price comparison. Before setting off, travelers should consider whether it would be better to stock up at the nearest supermarket and save themselves the often high costs at rest stops. Because even though fixing a growling stomach is important, that doesn't mean you have to go overboard to do it.
