Lifeguards on duty: 4,000 bathers at Barracuda Beach in view!

Next weekend, a large crowd is expected at the “Barracuda Beach” outdoor pool in Neustadt-Glewe. The beautiful weather and the Airbeat One festival attract numerous visitors. The challenge for the rescuers is correspondingly great. The lifeguards from the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) have to keep an eye on up to 4,000 bathers when the outdoor pool is full. In order to ensure optimal safety in such situations, the number of lifeguards will be increased from four to ten, as the SVZ reports.

In the Ludwigslust-Parchim region, the ASB water rescue service ensures safety at a total of 14 bathing areas. Volunteer lifeguards are also on duty when swimming in natural waters such as Lake Sternberger, Lake Goldberg and Lake Dobbertiner. This bathing season, between 150 and 180 swimmers use their free time at the bathing areas to help others. Many of them perform their service without any legal exemption from work - a true achievement that should be valued.

Water Safety: A Common Concern

But it's not just the ASB that is active: the DRK water rescue service also ensures the safety of bathers. It is used, among other places, in Parchim (Wockersee natural pool) and Plau am See (beach). The DRK water rescuers are also securing the bathing areas in Boizenburg and Hagenow. The DRK Wasserwacht has already reached its capacity limit here. Eight bathing areas are secured here exclusively by volunteers. The tasks of lifeguards are varied. They observe the beaches, provide first aid for minor injuries, help search for missing children and warn of dangers in unguarded waters such as overexertion or jumping into unknown waters, as can be read on the [DRK Wasserwacht] website (https://www.drk.de/wasserwacht/angebote/wachdienst-an-badestellen/).

The DLRG also makes a valuable contribution to the water rescue service. They monitor coastal and inland bathing beaches and are deployed in the event of swimming, boating and ice accidents. Your organization and coordination of emergency services plays a central role when it comes to water safety. The DLRG carries out the water rescue service independently and ensures that immediate assistance in and around the water is guaranteed, as described by the DLRG.

Special consideration is necessary, especially when children are near the water. They should never be left unattended, even if equipped with flotation devices, which do not provide complete protection against drowning. Responsible action is required here. The call for support, be it through becoming a lifeguard or through a mindful attitude in your free time, is more than just good advice - it is a responsibility towards ourselves and those around us. Because safety on the water begins with each and every one of us.
