Fiber optic expansion in Strasburg: Digital future begins on June 18th!

Something is happening in the area of digital infrastructure in Strasburg! On June 16, 2025, the city administration announced a comprehensive expansion of the fiber optic network. This project is intended to significantly improve transmission quality and network stability and to take into account the growing demands of home office, digital learning and demanding media use. Deutsche Telekom will play a crucial role in this project and local citizens are warmly invited to find out more on June 18, 2025 in the Max-Schmeling-Halle.

The public information evening begins at 6 p.m., where citizens not only receive information but also have the opportunity to ask questions. In addition, a mobile advice point will be set up on the market square from June 17th to 21st, 2025. A Telekom shop truck will be available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to offer technical advice. “We are pleased about the investments in our infrastructure,” emphasizes the city administration, while pointing out that an efficient network connection is now just as important as electricity and water.

Important information about fiber optic expansion

A fiber optic connection is not a major construction site but can be installed with minimal effort. Homeowners are involved in the planning, so installation usually takes less than an hour. Tenants only have to assume that costs will only arise when the new connection is activated. There are also contacts available on site who can answer questions about technology, tariffs, availability and processes. The events are offered by Deutsche Telekom and participation remains voluntary for citizens; after all, the decision for or against a fiber optic connection lies with each individual.

However, the importance of fiber optic expansion extends far beyond the city limits of Strasburg. As the federal government explains in a recent communication, the expansion of digital infrastructure is of outstanding public interest. This goal is particularly clear given the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic and other crises. Fast internet connections and the latest mobile communications standards are crucial for the modernization of Germany as a business location and serve to improve the quality of life of all citizens.

The current situation in Germany

In Germany, around 74 percent of households are currently supplied with gigabit connections, and yet the fiber optic connection still remains out of reach for many households. The fiber optic share is currently around 11 percent, which puts Germany in 36th place in the OECD ranking. In comparison, the fiber optic share in Switzerland is around 30 percent, which clearly shows where Germany stands in international comparison. The federal government's gigabit strategy plans to connect half of all households and companies to the fiber optic network by the end of 2025.

And so it remains to be said: The fiber optic expansion in Strasburg is not only a step for the city, but also part of an overarching strategy that improves the entire German digital infrastructure. Anyone who is still unsure about the options in the comfort of their own home should not miss the information events. As the saying goes: There's something going on!
