Mast break shock: Brazilian team out of the SailGP in Sassnitz!
The first takes place in Sassnitz on RügenSailGPtakes place in Germany, and the excitement couldn't be greater. But the start in this beautiful coastal town was overshadowed by a bitter setback: thisTeam Mubadala Brazilhas to forego participation due to a broken mast of her F50 foiler. Again Northern Courier reported, the starting field is made up of eleven instead of the original twelve catamarans. The competitions, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at 3:30 p.m., still promise exciting duels between the remaining teams.
The broken mast is not the first time that Martine Grael, the double Olympic champion in the 49erFX, has gotten into trouble with her team. Already in September last year there was a rig failure during training off Bermuda. Fortunately, both in this incident and now, all sailors remained uninjured, which is a small consolation in the midst of the shock.
The current status of the championship
The German team is currently in eleventh place in the championship standings in the fifth SailGP season. The big favorites for the event in Sassnitz are New Zealand, Australia, Spain and Great Britain. This makes it clear that the race not only promises an exciting spectacle, but is also characterized by strong competitors who will do everything in their power to show their performance.
Speaking of Spain: Diego Botin's team recently achieved an impressive victory in New York. In a thrilling final, they defeated New Zealand and France and secured the title Rolex SailGP Championship. The event took place on the Hudson River and attracted thousands of spectators who enjoyed the spectacle in the changeable weather. This second consecutive US victory gives the Spanish team an added boost.
A look ahead
With the SailGP in Sassnitz as the eighth of twelve stations this season, the hope remains that the competition will be rich and deliver exciting races even without the Brazilian team. The anticipation is increasing and fans can look forward to breathtaking maneuvers, strategies and an excellent celebrated sailing culture.
The event promises to be a true showcase of sailing. With sunny weather and a full field of spectators, the coastal town of Sassnitz can be the ideal location to host many more SailGP events in the future.
