Schwennenz celebrates 725 years: historical tour and anniversary celebration!

The small town of Schwennenz is celebrating a very special anniversary these days: the village is 725 years old. On June 26th, this event will be celebrated with an auspicious program that focuses on tradition and local craftsmanship. Gundula Mietzner has created a commemorative publication that not only honors the history but also the local craftsmen. In [Nordkurier](https://www.nordkurier.de/regional/pasewalk/grambower-ortsteil-schwennenz- Feiert-jubilaeum-mit-geschichteem-dorfrundgang-3678319) we learn that this commemorative publication is based on the valuable notes of Dieter Korth and Gerhard Rudolph.

Schwennenz was once home to over 20 craftsmen, including carpenters, saddlers and bakers. But after 1945 only 18 of them remained. Many craftsmen lost their independence during the GDR era when they were integrated into agricultural production cooperatives (LPG). Today, the community is all the more pleased about the small businesses and farms that are still active and contribute to the village identity.

Festive activities and historical insights

The celebrations begin on June 26th at 2 p.m. with a service in the church, which can also be visited. The highlight of the day follows at 3 p.m. with a historical village tour led by Thomas Reim and Peter Mörke. For this tour, 16 signs were created that provide information about the former trades. The preparations also included a photo exhibition that will take place in the former Kaiserhof gas station. A total of around 150 images were selected to present the history of crafts in Schwennenz, although a call for further images did not receive the desired response.

A special highlight of the anniversary will be the concert by the Neubrandenburg City Orchestra at 5 p.m. There will also be games for children on the village square and the anniversary disco at 8 p.m. will ensure a lively atmosphere. Mayor Mirko Ehmke emphasizes how important the festival committee's voluntary commitment is to organizing this anniversary.

The importance of craftsmanship in history

A look at history shows how important crafts were for our villages. Guilds governed crafts until the middle of the 18th century and ensured that young craftsmen went on journeys, which often represented an exciting adventure for them. This tradition has retained its place in the craft to this day. As Wickrath online shows, craftsmen such as blacksmiths, wheelwrights and saddlers were closely linked and dependent on each other.

But industrialization has caused many of these traditional professions to be forgotten. Today there are only a few people left who maintain the craftsmanship of their ancestors. Nevertheless, the craft lives on through the small businesses in Schwennenz, and the upcoming anniversary celebration shows that the appreciation for the craft and the village traditions is still very popular.
