Accident on Boxing Day: Dachshund and passengers injured!

On Boxing Day, December 26, 2025, there was a traffic accident in Gegensee near Eggesin around 4 p.m. A car carrying a 73-year-old driver from Schleswig-Holstein, a 55-year-old female passenger and a dachshund as passengers left the L28 for unknown reasons and crashed into a street tree. According to nordkurier.de, both vehicle occupants and the dog were slightly injured and taken to the hospital in Ueckermünde.

The vehicle's route was from Hintersee towards Ahlbeck when the accident occurred. The towing service from Pasewalk responsible for the damage took care of recovering the totally damaged car. The estimated total damage is around 26,000 euros, with the street tree also suffering significant damage. Several fire departments from Eggesin, Gegensee and Ahlbeck were deployed with various vehicles to secure the scene of the accident and limit the damage.

A look at traffic accidents in Germany

The accident in Gegensee is part of an increasingly worrying statistic. In 2024, around 2.5 million road traffic accidents were recorded in Germany, which represents a decrease compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the number of accidents with property damage has increased, while the number of accidents with personal injury has stagnated at historical levels. The EU has launched the “Vision Zero” goal to have no more traffic deaths by 2050. The Statista report shows that traffic deaths in Germany fell from 19,193 in 1970 to 2,770 in 2024.

Despite the downward trend, there are still many traffic accidents. Factors such as insufficient distance, improper speed and driving under the influence of alcohol are common causes of personal injury. The 2024 figures show that 40% of alcohol-related accidents resulted in personal injury, resulting in 198 deaths and 17,776 injuries. Lack of attention on the part of road users also remains a significant cause of accidents.

Special challenges

Particularly alarming is the increase in accidents involving e-bikes and e-scooters, with more than 26,000 riders injured or killed in 2024. Cyclists are the second most common cause of road traffic accidents after drivers. Road safety could be significantly increased through improved infrastructure and increased awareness among all road users.

Overall, it shows that there is still a lot going on in road traffic. The most recent incidents, such as the accident in Gegensee, remind us urgently that every individual is required to take responsibility and act more safely on the roads.
