Dark small car rams 13-year-old in Güstrow – police are asking for information!

A worrying incident occurred on October 13th in Güstrow, Rostock district. A 13-year-old was hit by a dark small car while riding her bike on Eisenbahnstrasse. Fortunately, the girl only suffered minor injuries, but police are appealing for the public's help and are looking for witnesses to the incident. The accident occurred around 7:30 a.m., a time when many children are on their way to school.

The situation was made even stranger by the behavior of the car's occupants. The passenger, a woman with red hair in a red jacket, briefly got out and asked about the well-being of the 13-year-old. The driver, an older man with white hair and glasses, insulted the injured child and inspected his vehicle before both fled the scene. This raises questions and increases the urgency for witnesses to come forward to clarify further details. Anyone with information can contact the police directly, who will gratefully receive any information in order to clarify this situation.

Increasing number of accidents among children

The incident in Güstrow is in a worrying context: According to a recent press release from the Federal Statistical Office, the number of children under 15 years of age killed in traffic increased from 44 in 2023 to 53 in 2024. Around 27,260 children under the age of 15 had accidents last year - a number that should concern us all. These traffic statistics are alarming and show that every 19 minutes a child is injured or killed in a traffic accident. Particularly at risk are 6 to 14 year olds, who are often involved in accidents between 7 and 8 a.m. and Monday to Friday.

What is particularly interesting is that in 2024, most children who had accidents were traveling in a car (35%), followed by cyclists (33%) and those on foot (21%). This illustrates how urgent it is to use targeted measures to increase road safety for children. Especially at a time when the number of accidents is increasing again, it is necessary that we remain vigilant and look out for one another.

Given the current situation, it is crucial that we raise awareness among our children and ensure that they travel safely. Parents should always discuss road safety with their children and point out what behavior they should observe in traffic.

For the police in Güstrow and everyone involved, this means continuing to ensure greater safety, especially with regard to the youngest road users. It remains to be hoped that witnesses to the incident will come forward and perhaps further preventative measures will be taken in traffic to prevent such sad events in the future.
