Volunteer Card 2025: Award for 74 heroes of the city of Rostock!

On June 14, 2025, the time for recognition for the tireless helpers of this city came once again in the Ostseestadion in Rostock. When the volunteer card was awarded, 74 committed volunteers from 24 different clubs were honored. An event that brought together both the actors and the entire city society.

The ceremonial handover was carried out by Steffen Bockhahn, the Senator for Youth and Social Affairs, Health, Schools and Sport. In a relaxed atmosphere in the Business Club South of the Ostseestadion, the honorees were able to take a group photo with Alexander Czerwinski, the president of the Rostock Griffins e.V., and the popular mascot Griffino. Afterwards, the volunteers had the opportunity to watch an exciting American football game between the Rostock Griffins and the Elmshorn Fighting Pirates.

Volunteering in focus

During the event, Senator Bockhahn emphasized the immense importance of volunteer work for society in Rostock. The new distribution of cards increased the total to an impressive 2,058. The newly honored organizations included the German Seaman's Mission Rostock e.V., the Evangelical Lutheran Slütergemeinde Rostock-Dierkow, Rostock Müllfrei e.V. and the Singakademie Rostock e.V. A nice proof of how colorful and diverse the volunteer landscape in the city is.

The volunteer card runs for three years and allows holders discounts or even free services from a variety of partners in the areas of sport, culture, leisure and local public transport. What is particularly noteworthy is that the Rostock Griffins offer special admission discounts to cardholders. Anyone who is interested can apply for the card, provided he or she has been working on a voluntary basis for at least three years. Young people can take part from as young as one year old as long as they are active for at least five hours a week or a total of 250 hours a year.

Data protection for volunteers

The application forms for the volunteer card are available both in the town hall and online. It is particularly important that all personal data is protected in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the State Data Protection Act (DSG M-V). The responsible body uses the MV service platform within the framework of the E-Government Act of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to process the data securely. Personal data will only be processed on the legal basis mentioned and will be deleted after the statutory retention periods have expired.

To make it easier for volunteers to comply with data protection, the development of clear data protection guidelines within organizations is essential. These guidelines should be accessible to all stakeholders, including external volunteers. Regularly reviewing and updating these policies ensures compliance with all legal requirements. Particular attention should also be paid to the use of private devices, as many volunteers use their own devices, for example when processing participation lists.

The volunteer card not only recognizes the commitment, but also ensures that the volunteers in Rostock are well protected. Such a combination of recognition and protection helps many more people get involved in the community and show a good understanding of local problems and challenges.
