Burglar on construction site steals money and jewelry in Rostock!

On Friday, September 19th, a criminal incident occurred in the Evershagen district of Rostock, which caused a stir not only in the neighborhood. A 31-year-old Georgian citizen broke into the apartment of a tenant who was at home at the time but in another room. The perpetrator used force to gain entry through a window and stole cash and jewelry. Police were alerted less than an hour after the break-in when the suspect was already involved in an altercation at a Doberan gas station. There he behaved aggressively and uncooperatively, which led to his arrest because he had previously been wanted by a court order. When the man was searched, the police discovered not only a health insurance card that belonged to a woman whose apartment he had just robbed, but also other stolen items. At the time of his arrest, the perpetrator had 1.52 per mille of alcohol in his blood and was taken to the correctional facility, as the Ostsee-Zeitung reports.

But that wasn't the only incident in Rostock in recent days. On the night of Saturday to Sunday there was another break-in at a gas station in the Brinckmansdorf district. After forcing the doors open, the perpetrators systematically searched the rooms and even stole the safe. The fleeing car, a silver station wagon with stolen license plates, causes additional excitement in the region. The police are investigating and have already sent the criminal investigation service to the crime scene to collect clues. It is still unclear whether this is an organized crime. The attentive public is asked to pass on any information about the perpetrators or the getaway vehicle to the police. According to Nordkurier, there is an urgent need for help.

Burglaries in Germany: A growing problem

The incidents in Rostock are evidence of an overarching problem that affects the entire Federal Republic. According to Statista, there were approximately 119,000 thefts in and out of homes in 2023, with 77,800 cases classified as home burglaries. This represents the highest level since 2019, but the numbers are still over 50% lower compared to 2015. The clearance rate for residential burglaries is only 14.9%, which poses major challenges for the police.

The increase in burglaries that has occurred following the corona pandemic is particularly worrying. The risk of burglaries is particularly high in urban federal states such as Bremen, Berlin and Hamburg, while Bavaria has a lower rate in comparison. The highest increase took place in Mülheim an der Ruhr, where the most cases were documented with 283 burglaries per 100,000 inhabitants.

In such a climate of insecurity, it is not only the material damage that weighs on the victims, but also the violation of their privacy and the sense of security that is taken away from them. Psychological sequelae are common, and the fear of further attacks remains present. The police have recorded an increase in suspects in recent years, with foreign perpetrators being involved in 42.9% of the cases solved - a high that is not without controversy in the political discussion.

The current events in Rostock are therefore more than just isolated cases; They reflect a development that affects many people and makes clear the need for action by the police and society.
