Rostock: Triple the speed camera millions – speeding violations are booming!

There are cities in Germany that distinguish themselves not only through their culture or history, but also through their hefty income from fines. One such city is Rostock, which will once again join the illustrious circle of “speed camera millionaires” in 2024. How Northern Courier reported that revenue from speeding and red light violations in Rostock increased significantly - by almost one million euros to now 3.4 million euros. This means that the city has taken third place compared to other East German cities, behind Chemnitz (7.3 million euros) and Erfurt (3.6 million euros).

But how does this high income come about? A survey by the traffic law working group of the German Bar Association (DAV) showed that Rostock is one of the “speed camera nations” in Germany. By 2022, many German cities, including Rostock, had already earned over one million euros from speed cameras. Across Germany, 41 of the 140 cities surveyed were able to move into this league, and 25 cities exceeded the million mark.

Lightning locations and density in Rostock

The high density of speed cameras in Rostock is particularly noteworthy. With a total of nine stationary measuring locations, the city is at the top in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The most common speed camera location, the intersection of Rövershäger Chaussee and Dierkower Allee, recorded more than 8,800 speeding vehicles in one year - a clear indicator that there is a need for action here.

Compared to other cities in Germany, where revenue is collected through speeding violations, Rostock ranks high. With regard to the entire Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania region, the authorities have set up 91 permanently installed speed cameras, including traffic light speed cameras. In a nationwide comparison, the state has a speed camera density of 0.039 per 100 square kilometers, which puts it in eleventh place in the overall statistics.

Overview of speed camera millionaires 2024

City Revenue (in million euros)
Hamburg 47
Chemnitz 7.3
Erfurt 3.6
Rostock 3.4
Weimar 2.6
Frankfurt/Oder 1.4

The DAV survey also showed that the income from these violations flows into the respective municipal budgets. The total revenue volume in the East German cities surveyed is around 28 million euros, while the total in all cities surveyed is 153 million euros. This is a direct result of a relevant increase in fines, which last took place in 2021 and particularly affected lower speed limits.

Another focus is on the trends that have emerged in recent years. Speed camera revenue in the cities surveyed almost doubled from 58.3 million euros in 2021 to 134.5 million euros in 2022. Around a fifth of German cities have joined the ranks of speed camera millionaires - similar to Rostock - and are benefiting enormously from the consistent monitoring of traffic, which not only increases income but should also lead to improved traffic safety.

It remains to be seen in the future whether the trend will continue and how the regulations surrounding speed monitoring will develop. What is clear, however, is that Rostock is not only very popular for its tourist attractions, but also cleverly ensures its road safety.
