Rostock commemorates the victims of the November pogrom on November 10, 2025
On November 10, 2025, Rostock commemorates the 87th anniversary of the November pogrom, a dark chapter in German history that also left its mark on the Hanseatic city. On this day, the city is asked to remember the violence and destruction that befell the Jewish community at that time. This is not an easy topic, but it is important to face the dark memories. The Rostock town hall informed that the memorial service begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Jewish cemetery in Lindenpark.
The leading voices at the memorial event include the state rabbi Yuriy Kadnykov and Yuri Rosov, chairman of the Rostock Jewish Community. Your words should not only remind you, but also connect you. There will then be a shared walk to the memorial stele at the former location of the synagogue on Augustenstrasse. The official memorial event will take place at 10 a.m., with Mayor Eva-Maria Kröger and President of the City Council Dr. Heinrich Prophet will have his say. The event is organized by the Max Samuel House, the Jewish Community of Rostock, the Interreligious Dialogue and the city of Rostock.
Remembering and commemorating
During Kristallnacht in 1938, Rostock experienced a wave of violence against Jews, which manifested itself in the destruction of synagogues and shops and the desecration of the Jewish cemetery. At that time, 64 Jewish residents of Rostock were taken into protective custody. These terrible memories are not only part of the past, but also a reminder for the present. Northern Courier emphasizes that the last visible signs of Jewish life in Rostock disappeared as a result of the November pogrom.
The students of the Jenaplan School will read out the names of the Rostock victims of the Shoah as part of the memorial event, which will certainly be a moving moment. At the same time, this gesture shows how important it is to pass on memories to future generations.
Decentralized memorial event
In addition to the commemoration on November 10th, there will be a decentralized memorial event on November 9th entitled “Sound of the Memorial Stones”. This will take place at six locations in Rostock and will offer small concerts between 5:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. The finale is the Yiddish song “Dos Kelbl”. The memorial stones commemorate the victims and are spread across the city, including in Altschmiedestrasse, Kröpeliner Strasse and the Neuer Markt. ZDF Today emphasizes that November 9th is not only a call to look back, but also a call to take anti-Semitism in the present seriously and to actively fight against it.
Both events are a call for concern and participants from across the region, including Bad Kösteritz, Gera, Jena, Naumburg, Schwaan and Weimar, will help ensure that the memories are not forgotten. The voices of the past must be integrated into our today so that together we can take a stand against anti-Semitism and intolerance.
