Shocking cycling accidents in the Rostock district: Injured people and significant property damage!
In the last few days the region around Rostock has received sad news. Last Saturday there were two serious accidents between cyclists and cars, which vividly illustrate the dangers in road traffic.
The first incident occurred in Bad Doberan, where a 16-year-old cyclist carelessly crossed the road and was hit by a car. The teenager was seriously injured and had to be taken to hospital. Another accident took place in Pölchow, in which a 35-year-old cyclist collided with a 41-year-old driver. This cyclist also suffered serious injuries, while the driver of the vehicle was only slightly injured. In both cases, the cyclists' carelessness was the cause, which led to a total of around 15,000 euros in property damage. The NDR reported on these incidents and thus draws attention to a worrying development.
Increasing number of accidents among cyclists
The number of accidents is increasing not only in northern Germany. According to an analysis by Tagesschau, there were around 27,400 cycling accidents without anyone else involved in 2023, with many of these accidents being due to inadequate infrastructure and weather conditions. Collisions between cyclists and drivers are particularly dangerous, resulting in 5,112 serious injuries and 178 deaths. A rising number of solo accidents – which has more than doubled in the last 15 years – shows that the status quo urgently needs to be reconsidered. The causes are diverse and include both human error and structural defects.
The statistics also reveal that almost two thirds of cyclists said their own riding style was a factor in their fall. Almost every third cyclist involved in an accident was traveling too fast in the situation in question. Pedelecs in particular, which are becoming increasingly popular among many cyclists, are responsible for more serious injuries because they are usually faster and heavier than conventional bicycles.
Special risks for older cyclists
According to a current study by the Federal Statistical Office, the proportion of cyclists who have fatal accidents are under 65 years of age or older, which highlights the risks for older drivers. In 2024, 16 percent of those killed in road traffic were cyclists, with over 60 percent of these fatal accidents involving cyclists over 65 years of age, often without an auxiliary motor. The Destatis study indicates that in accidents with personal injuries, cyclists were primarily to blame in around 50.7 percent of cases, which underlines the need to specifically train cyclists and raise awareness of road safety.
These developments show that it is high time to think about solutions to increase safety on the roads. Whether through better infrastructure, comprehensive traffic safety or educational campaigns: It is important to raise awareness of the dangers in road traffic and to ensure that both cyclists and drivers reach their destination safely.
