Sweden Festival in Wismar: traffic restrictions and parking bans from today!
In the Hanseatic city of Wismar, preparations for this year's Sweden Festival are in full swing. From August 14th to 17th, 2025, the old town will be transformed into a colorful festival area with a historic Swedish camp, a lively market and numerous entertainment options. The event, which is in its 24th year, attracts numerous visitors every year and creates a unique atmosphere in the city.
But before the big rush begins, there are some important changes to city traffic to consider. From August 11, 2025, i.e. today, the market square in Wismar will no longer be accessible to drivers until August 18, 2025, 6 p.m. This ensures that all preparations for the festival go smoothly. There is also a parking ban on the market square in order to create enough space for the festival. Additional road closures will come into effect from August 13th on Dankwartstrasse, Breiten Strasse, Ziegenmarkt, Stockholmer Strasse and Mecklenburger Strasse. These measures are being taken to clear traffic areas for the celebrations and to ensure a safe environment for all visitors.
Cycling ban and parking options
Cyclists in particular need to be careful during the Sweden Festival: from August 11th to 18th there is a ban on cycling in the pedestrian zone of the old town and at the Old Harbor. This ban comes into force when the festival stands are set up and lasts until the last attractions are dismantled. The city administration of Wismar has already pointed out these regulations in a press release and recommends using alternative means of transport.
There is also positive news for everyone who still wants to travel by car. There are enough parking spaces available around the city center where festival visitors can park their vehicles. The Hanseatic city ensures that sufficient parking space is provided despite the closed areas in the city center.
A variety of events to celebrate the Swedish festival
The Sweden Festival not only has a long tradition, but is also known for its colorful mix of events. There will be various activities alongside the festivities, including a taster run for children and a KUBB tournament on August 16th. The Sweden Run will take place on August 17th, where both children and adults can compete in various distances. The city library also offers something special: On August 11, 2025, from 7:00 p.m., there will be a reading by the author Juli Katz, who has already won several awards.
Thanks to a well-thought-out program of events, Wismar can offer a varied cultural offering all year round. Whether harbor festival, international street theater or Christmas market – there is something for every taste. However, the Sweden Festival will certainly be one of the highlights in the city's annual calendar.
Advance planning and resulting traffic restrictions are necessary to ensure the safety and comfort of all visitors. The Hanseatic city is looking forward to warmly welcoming both locals and tourists - a sign of solidarity and the shared joy of festive traditions.
