Five Lakes Run: Over 3,400 runners celebrate a fantastic sports festival in Schwerin!

On July 5, 2025 it was again “ready, set, go!” at the Five Lakes Run in Schwerin. Around 3,400 participants from various countries such as Denmark, the USA and Norway came together to run together around the picturesque Lake Schwerin. This time the starting signal was creatively set at 8:30 a.m. at Bertha-Klingberg-Platz, and the athletes were able to let off steam in the five categories: nautical mile, 10 kilometers, half marathon (21.1 kilometers) and walking.

The 10 km distance attracted the most participants with almost 1000 runners. With a time of under 40 minutes, Moritz Faß was able to claim victory in this category. Particularly noteworthy was the participation of the oldest athletes of the day: Maria-Luise Klugs from Hanover in the half marathon and Gert Kleinschmidt, who mastered the 10 km distance at the proud age of 87. Among the other participants were fifteen runners from the Neustadt-Glewe athletics section, who rose to the challenge in their own way.

Insights and support

The event was not only a sporting event, but also a celebration of solidarity. Over 200 helpers were on hand, including friends, families and volunteers from the fire department, who made the event a complete success. A medical team was also on site to ensure the safety of the runners. Above all, the participation of family members who brought name tags for their relatives created a warm atmosphere.

The sea mile for children up to 12 years old also had a great response and had 312 participants. A special highlight were the three brothers from Ludwigslust, who described the race as their home race and thus provided a piece of regional identity. In addition, the 40-strong group led by Ricarda Saffan and her colleague Ronny von Trolli in Hagenow was proof of how a sense of community also emerges in sporting competition.

Health and safety

But behind the happy hustle and bustle there is also a serious note. Participation in the Five Lakes Run includes the acceptance of an extensive exclusion of liability. Participants must be aware that they are responsible for their own health and must also agree to a medical exclusion in the event of health risks. This ensures that all athletes are well prepared and physically fit to enjoy their competition to the fullest. The German Athletics Association has also developed an international questionnaire to assess health risks in order to raise awareness of preventive health care and thus minimize the risk of injuries.

The results of all participants can be viewed online and provide an overview not only of the achievements, but also of the community that was created through this run. The organization of the Five Lakes Run shows that sport is not just a competition, but also an opportunity to bring people together and raise awareness of their health, in keeping with the spirit of community.
