Stralsund: Garage lease dispute escalates – report brings hope!
Things have been simmering in Stralsund for some time, but now something could finally be moving. The dispute over garage leases, which began in 2024, is taking a new turn. An expert report is intended to provide clarity after the citizens unanimously decided to appoint an external expert to reassess the situation. Ostsee Zeitung reports that the increase in the rent for garage parking spaces from 100 to 274 euros on January 1, 2024 - an increase to 480 euros was originally planned - got the ball rolling.
Garage community members reacted strongly to this increase and refused to pay the new prices. This led to a lawsuit by the city, which failed in the district court. The court demanded an appraisal or at least comparable rental values to justify the increase. However, since the responsible district of Vorpommern-Rügen is currently placing little priority on completing such a report - and a result is not expected until 2027 at the earliest - the city is now considering bringing in an expert from the IHK in order to move forward more quickly.
A step in the right direction
In the citizenry, so reported daily news, there was a majority approval on November 14, 2025 to commission an IHK expert. The goal? To clarify the local comparative rent for garage parking spaces. If the district's expert committee does not submit a report by the end of May 2026, the appointed IHK expert will take action.
Mayor Alexander Badrow sees this decision as positive because it is intended to provide clarity for both citizens and the administration. Even though the AfD group initially reacted with outrage, they ultimately agreed. While the citizens are dealing with other issues such as the repair of the St. Jürgen cemetery, the clarification of garage leases remains an urgent concern.
The future of garage leases
As is often the case with such topics, a lot remains uncertain until the matter is finally clarified. The rental prices will remain at the current level for the time being. However, the MPs agree that the costs of the report should be billed to the district. It remains to be seen who has the last word here.
In these stormy times it is important to keep an overview. The issue of leasing a garage in Stralsund shows once again how quickly tempers can flare up and how much patience is often required to come to an agreement. Another example of the challenges that local politics brings with it.
