Construction starts in Wismar: Zierower Landstrasse will be renovated by 2028!

The building construction project on Zierower Landstrasse in Wismar has now officially begun. The road will be renovated over a stretch of around 566 meters between the Ostseeblick confluence and the access to Marktkauf and Aldi supermarket. The aim of this extensive work, which is due to be completed by 2028, is not only to maintain the infrastructure, but also to improve safety on school routes, which will be achieved through the new sidewalk and the planned crossing point with traffic lights on Zierower Weg. Overall, this construction project will also involve laying new rain and wastewater pipes as well as drinking water and gas pipes. The telecommunications lines and broadband cables will also be relocated and re-laid in order to further improve the digital connection. In addition, the project plans to renew and optimize the existing lighting system. This work will be carried out in several sections, most of which will result in a complete closure of the affected road sections. Detailed information on the closure measures will be provided after all necessary coordination has been completed, according to the city administration.

Planned sections and costs

The first partial construction phase began in mid-June 2025 and includes renovation work on the rain retention basin and the laying of rainwater pipes outside the street area. A second partial construction phase is planned for the fourth quarter of 2025. The total costs of the construction project amount to around 4.57 million euros, with a subsidy of up to 65.95 percent expected from the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for the Hanseatic city of Wismar. Wirtschaft-MV emphasizes that such infrastructure projects are specifically aimed at promoting economic development in coastal areas and improving accessibility to rural regions.

As part of its infrastructure policy, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is concentrating on various road and port construction measures. The construction project on Zierower Landstrasse is part of this comprehensive strategy, which includes both expansion projects such as the B96 and the renovation of local thoroughfares. The aim is to strengthen the connection to rural areas and at the same time support the business location through better transport routes. Government-MV reports how important functioning transport routes are for employees with long commutes and that a well-developed rail network and transport projects, such as the Baltic Sea motorway, are crucial for economic development.

With this measure, the Hanseatic city of Wismar shows that it has a good knack for investing in the future. Implementing citizens' interests in accordance with environmental policy requirements remains a challenge that is addressed with targeted environmental impact assessments and the latest technology. The hope for positive effects, especially on tourism and the regional economy, remains unbroken.
