Hansa Rostock loses lawsuit: game against Unterhaching is finally canceled!

The sporting disputes in football can sometimes also take on a legal dimension, and FC Hansa Rostock recently experienced a setback when their lawsuit against SpVgg Unterhaching was dismissed by a DFB court. The Rostock team had sued against the short-term cancellation of a third division game in March, but the DFB's Permanent Federal Court of Justice rejected the lawsuit as inadmissible and unfounded, as wismar.fm reports.

The game in question was not canceled without reason - the municipality of Unterhaching had closed the sports park due to safety concerns. The local security authorities classified the SpVgg's security concept for the 2024/2025 season as inadequate. It was agreed that the safe conduct of the game could not be guaranteed, which led to the decision to block it after discussions between club representatives and the security authorities, as Sportschau emphasizes. The DFB and Hansa Rostock were notified of the closure at an early stage.

The catch-up game and the background

The match, originally scheduled for the 26th matchday of the past season, finally took place on May 7th, with the result 2-0 for Rostock against SpVgg Unterhaching, who were later relegated. Despite this sporting success, the club was also preoccupied with the completely unreasonable concern of bringing about a fundamental decision. This could potentially have had far-reaching consequences for future games and the DFB's regulations.

The chairman of the board, Jürgen Wehlend from Hansa Rostock, expressed the opinion that the short-term cancellation should be viewed as a non-attendance for Hansa. The relocation resulted in additional costs and increased effort, which the people of Rostock did not want to accept. Finally, the procedure was completed; There are no legal remedies against the arbitration award, which in no way makes the situation any easier for the people of Rostock. Due to the current uncertainties, it is even being examined whether there should be necessary revisions to the DFB's regulations.

Security management in football

In order to avoid similar incidents in the future, the need for comprehensive security management in football is becoming increasingly clear. The issue of security not only affects the games themselves, but also the organization and preliminary analyzes in the club. The SRH Hochschule Heidelberg therefore offers a certificate program for security management in football, which is based on seven modules and teaches the important aspects of security concepts, crisis management and violence prevention.

The aim of such initiatives: to create safe framework conditions for everyone involved. Ultimately, ultimate sporting success is also at stake, not to mention the economic aspects that such incidents can entail. While the people of Rostock are trying to get over the legal cliffs, it remains to be hoped that lessons will be learned from this situation and that the safety of spectators and players will not be put at risk.
