Flood alarm on the Baltic Sea: Current water levels for the Bay of Lübeck!

On June 13, 2025, water levels in the Baltic Sea, also known as the Baltic Sea, will be a hot topic again. The tested stations in the Bay of Lübeck, including Heiligenhafen, Marienleuchte, Neustadt and Wismar, show how the water behaves. For some measurements there are records for warnings issued by the relevant authorities.

The current level values are updated daily using data from BSH. Particular attention should be paid to the values for the “mean low water” (MNW) and the “mean high water” (MHW). For Neustadt the values for the MNW are 386 cm and for the MHW 630 cm. Historical highs and lows quickly come into focus with such a weather range: The current highest flood level (HHW) in Neustadt was recorded on November 13, 1872 at 782 cm.

Flood warnings and city maps

As we know, the summer months in northern Germany can be unpredictable. Increasingly hotter summers lead to more intense but less frequent rainfall, which can cause devastating damage in the event of flooding. The BKG flood atlas brings together flood-relevant data sets and enables authorities and the public to obtain a comprehensive overview of possible dangers.

The flood warning levels in Lower Saxony are clearly defined: Alert level 1 indicates a small flood, while alert level 4 warns of very large floods. It is important to be attentive and follow the latest news. Alerts occur through various channels such as radio, television and even social media. This ensures that everyone is informed in a timely manner.

In addition, the hydrological conditions on the German Baltic Sea coast are analyzed monthly by the BSH. These reports provide information about water levels, temperatures and weather phenomena associated with storm surges or storm low tide events. The population can therefore rely on well-founded data to better assess the situation.

Given the dynamics of the weather, the forecasts are not only important for scientists or authorities - citizens should also keep an eye on this data. With a good grasp of the weather conditions and knowledge of possible flood warnings, you can prepare and act better.
