Serious sea rescue at MidsummerSail: Sailors in mortal danger!

A dramatic maritime emergency occurred today as part of the MidsummerSail, the popular sailing event that took place in the waters of the German-Danish border area. The affected ship, the trimaran “Avanza”, capsized under the leadership of the experienced solo sailor Rüdiger Schwarz, was discovered north of Rügen at around 12:30 p.m. Loud Wismar FM The sailor's emergency radio beacon transmitted a signal via satellite, which triggered an immediate alert to the rescue services.

The experts from the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Center (MRCC) Bremen, which is operated by the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS), took over the coordination of the rescue measures. They were supported by Danish and Swedish emergency services, who were able to intervene quickly. The German survey, wreck search and research vessel “Deneb” of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) played a crucial role in finding the “Avanza” and thus initiating the rescue.

Rescue with a helping hand

Rüdiger Schwarz was spotted standing on the capsized boat and was quickly rescued by a dinghy. He was then taken by a Danish search and rescue helicopter to Roskilde for medical treatment. Weather conditions were tense during the regatta, with winds exceeding 20 knots, making sailing even more difficult.

The place of capsizing was about halfway between the northern tip of Rügen and the island of Bornholm. The sea rescuers responsible for safety in the maritime area kept the traffic control center informed about the location of the “Avanza” in order to warn other ships in the sea about the danger of the overturned yacht German flag.

Important safety measures

The DGzRS, which has been able to rescue over 87,000 people from distress at sea since it was founded in 1865, was once again a lifesaver in times of need. It is important that sailors like Rüdiger Schwarz are aware of the risks and take appropriate safety measures. The use of emergency numbers and emergency apps such as SafeTrx is strongly recommended. In our region, the sea rescue control center can be reached via the short code 124 124, while in an emergency your cell phone also acts as a backup to the VHF marine radio. Sailors should definitely save the number +49 421 536870 in international format in case of an emergency and ensure that the key lock is activated to avoid accidental calls, such as Seenotretter.de explained.

This incident can serve as a powerful example of the importance of always being prepared and taking advantage of available options for safety on the water. We are pleased that timely action was taken in this case and that no serious injuries were reported.
