Wismar on the upswing: election chaos, port strength and excursions for children!
The bird world will be very active in Wismar on December 1, 2025: While the city is seeing numerous developments, the coming days will be dominated by important decisions and charitable initiatives. The district music school in Wismar has to move quickly after structural defects were discovered. The move to the adult education center building is expected to take place shortly; a decision by the district council is scheduled for Thursday. This development brings a breath of fresh air to musical education in the city.
Another important point: a new election attempt for the post of deputy mayor will take place on December 4th after the election on November 27th failed. Three applicants will be available to choose from at the meeting, which is open to the public. The successor to Michael Berkhahn (CDU) will be elected by the citizens. However, predictions about the majority ratio are difficult, which makes the situation exciting.
Wismar's role in goods handling
Among the seaports in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Wismar takes a solid second place with a goods throughput of 2.3 million tons in 2024. This means that the port city has increased significantly compared to the previous year. Rostock remains the clear number one in this area with an impressive 23.4 million tons. These figures demonstrate the economic importance of the Wismar port, which continues to establish itself as an essential economic engine in the region.
Charitable initiatives for children
Social issues are also not neglected in Wismar. The “Licht am Horizont” association has launched a remarkable initiative and organizes excursions and boat trips for children from financially weak families. Many parents cannot afford leisure activities for their children, which is why the association relies on donations to finance invitations. A nice gesture that shows how important community support is.
New cultural places and historical renovation
The city has also tried to create new cultural offerings. The “Kiosk of Ideas”, opened by student Sara R., acts as a new place for meetings in the city. It is open daily until December 2nd from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the “Unterstrichmetzgerei” (Lübsche Straße 51) and offers a platform for creative ideas and conversations.
Promoting historical preservation measures is also important. Wismar will receive 75,000 euros in funding for the restoration of a historic window in the Holy Spirit Church. The window has 26 glass panels and is part of an important medieval window cycle in northern Germany. The total cost of the project is 150,000 euros, which encourages the city to raise additional funds to preserve this valuable heritage.
