On Thursday evening, René Domke of the FDP was elected as the new deputy mayor and senator for construction of Wismar. With a narrow majority of 17 votes, he defeated Maik Schröder from the SPD, who received 16 votes. The election was postponed to the third round due to interruptions the previous week. In the first round of voting, the CDU candidate Lars Sperling did not receive a single vote and was eliminated. The support of “Citizens for Wismar” and the AfD could have significantly contributed to Domke’s success, as only a simple majority was needed for the election in the third round. Domke, who was born in Wismar in 1972, has already had a remarkable career. After graduating as a financial economist, he has worked in the financial administration of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since 1994 and has led the FDP parliamentary group in the state parliament since 2021. He has also been active in the Wismar community since 2006. With his election as first deputy mayor, he succeeds Michael Berkhahn (CDU), whose term of office will soon end. Domke expressed his wish to largely withdraw from party positions after taking office at the end of March 2026 in order to be able to fully concentrate on his tasks in Wismar.
