Construction site chaos in Wolgast: completion of Breite Straße delayed!

The construction site haggling in Wolgast never ends. The Breite Straße, an important traffic route to the island of Usedom, remains a problem child for the time being. Wolgast Mayor Martin Schröter has revealed his dissatisfaction with the slow construction progress and is calling for rapid completion by the end of May 2026. This is necessary in order to ease traffic conditions during the holiday season and to avoid the numerous detours through the old town, which are already causing considerable damage to streets and buildings. The completion of the construction work was originally announced for the end of 2024, but unforeseeable obstacles and incorrect pipeline plans threw a spanner in the works. These mishaps extended construction time by more than nine months. According to Christian Zschiesche, the technical director of the association, it was primarily incomplete representations of the location of supply lines that led to the delays. In addition, the laying of fiber optic cables and subsequent work on the construction site caused additional problems. Northern Courier

Current status of construction work

The focus is now on the second section, where the asphalt base course is already being installed. At the same time, work on parking areas and sidewalks is underway. The renewal of necessary pipes for drinking water, wastewater and rainwater disposal should also be completed before the asphalt surface layer is applied.The Neustrelitz road construction authority is concerned with improving the traffic conditions in the town's thoroughfares. These measures are being carried out in close cooperation with the city of Wolgast as well as Gasbedarf Vorpommern Netz GmbH and E.DIS, who are also working on their supply systems.

Breite Straße will be modernized in a total of four sections in order to keep restrictions for residents and businesses as low as possible:

• 1. Backofentrift bis Mühlentrift
• 2. Mühlentrift bis Breiten Straße 10
• 3. Breiten Straße 10 bis Homeyerstraße
• 4. Homeyerstraße bis Aufstellstrecke Kreuzungsbereich

In view of the challenges, an on-site meeting will take place in January 2026 to discuss possible optimizations of the overall construction project. Mayor Schröter maintains that Breite Straße must be completed before the 2026 season in order not to endanger holiday tourism and to sustainably improve the traffic situation.
